What is whooping cough

Whooping cough may be mainly some acute respiratory infectious diseases caused by Bordetella pertussis. Clinically, it is mainly characterized by frequent coughing and inhalation, and there is always an increase in blood lymphocytes. If not treated, the disease will last for two to three months in children. Many people also suffer from whooping cough. The main symptoms are dry cough and lack of progress, and paroxysmal basic coughs.

His symptoms and signs are mainly coughing, sneezing, runny nose and cold-like symptoms. At the same time, there are some coughs. In daily life, there are more and more coughs that do not heal. 1. The catarrhal stage or the pre-spasmodic cough stage is characterized by coughing, sneezing, runny nose, tears, low or moderate fever, similar to cold symptoms. After 3 to 4 days, the symptoms disappear and the fever subsides, but the cough gradually worsens, especially at night. This stage is the most contagious and can last for 7 to 10 days. If treated promptly, the development of the disease can be effectively controlled.

2. Spasmodic cough stage If the catarrhal stage is not controlled, the patient will experience paroxysmal spasmodic cough, which is characterized by frequent and uninterrupted short coughs of more than 10 times, like exhalation, and finally a deep exhalation. At this time, the negative pressure in the chest cavity is caused by coughing, and when inhaling, the vocal cords are still in a tense state. The air flow quickly passes through the narrow glottis and emits a high-pitched inhalation sound like a rooster's crow, followed by a series of coughing. The attacks repeat themselves, each time becoming more severe than the last, until the patient coughs up large amounts of thick phlegm and vomits the contents of the stomach. There are triggers before spasmodic cough occurs, and there are often uncomfortable signs such as itchy throat and chest tightness during the attack. When the child senses that a spasmodic cough is coming, he or she will show fear, and his or her expression will be painful when the spasmodic cough occurs. During spasmodic coughing, the pressure in the chest cavity increases, the return of the superior vena cava is blocked, the jugular vein is distended, the eyelids and face are congested and edematous, the lips are cyanotic, and the conjunctiva is congested. If the capillaries rupture, it may cause subconjunctival hemorrhage and nosebleed. Some patients have their tongue sticking out and rubbing against their incisors, and tongue-tie ulcers are common. Some patients suffer from incontinence and hernia due to coughing paroxysms and increased abdominal pressure. If no complications occur, this period usually lasts 2 to 6 weeks, but may also last up to 2 months or more. The symptoms of whooping cough in infants, young children and newborns are rather special. There is no typical spasmodic cough. Due to the small glottis, respiratory arrest may occur due to vocal cord spasm and blockage of viscous secretions. Cyanosis and even convulsions may occur due to lack of oxygen, and death may also occur due to suffocation. In adults or older children, whooping cough symptoms are mild and atypical, mainly manifested as dry cough, no paroxysmal spasmodic cough, and no obvious increase in white blood cells and lymphocytes. Most of them are misdiagnosed as bronchitis or upper respiratory tract infection.

3. During the recovery period, the frequency of paroxysmal coughing gradually decreases and eventually disappears, and improvement and recovery will last for 2 to 3 weeks. If there are complications such as pneumonia and atelectasis, the disease often persists and may last for several weeks.
