Arrowroot is a perennial erect herb, 0.4-1m tall. The rhizome is fleshy, white, spindle-shaped, 5-7 cm long, with broad triangular scales. Stem weak, dichotomously branched. The petiole is cylindrical at the top, 5-10mm long, and the petiole base is sheath-shaped; the leaf blade is ovate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate, 10-20cm long and 4-10cm wide, with acuminate tip and rounded base, and the back is glabrous or thinly covered with long soft hairs. The raceme is terminal, 10-20cm long; the flowers are white, and the pedicels are about 1cm long; the sepals are ovate-lanceolate, 1.2-1.4cm long; the corolla tube is about the same length as the sepals, enlarged at the base, with 3 lobes, 8-10cm long; the two reduced stamens in the outer whorl are obovate, petal-shaped, 8-10mm long, with concave tips, and the inner whorl is only half as long as the outer whorl; the ovary is glabrous or slightly pubescent. The fruit is brown, oblong, and about 7mm long. Flowering period: summer and autumn.
