Symptoms and treatment of periostitis

Symptoms and treatment of periostitis

Among orthopedic diseases, periostitis is very common. Generally speaking, after suffering from periostitis, the body will have many symptoms: pain, congestion and edema, movement disorders, etc. The causes of periostitis include bacterial infection and other reasons. Generally speaking, for the treatment of periostitis, antibiotic treatment will be carried out in the early stage, and relevant rehabilitation and daily health care will be carried out according to the patient's condition in the later stage.

Treatment of periostitis

In our lives, many people often suffer from periostitis. So how should periostitis be treated? What are the treatments? Let's take a look at it together.

Whether periostitis can be completely cured depends on three aspects: timely and accurate diagnosis; timely and effective comprehensive treatment; timely functional exercise and good daily health care.

1. Timely and clear diagnosis

The main symptoms of periostitis are joint swelling, followed by pain, dysfunction, and muscle atrophy. Some patients blindly receive treatment without a correct diagnosis, thus losing the best time for treatment.

2. Timely and effective comprehensive treatment

Timely, regular and effective treatment after diagnosis is the key. Antibiotic treatment in the early stages of periostitis can achieve satisfactory results.

3. Timely functional training and post-rehabilitation care

When treating periostitis, it is recommended to carry out treatment and functional exercise at the same time, so as to avoid the occurrence of complications after recovery.

Symptoms of periostitis

1. Systemic symptoms

The systemic symptoms of non-infectious periostitis are mild. Only in acute hematogenous osteomyelitis are systemic symptoms severe. Prodromal symptoms include general fatigue, followed by body aches, loss of appetite, chills, and in severe cases, chills. There is often a hyperthermia of 39 to 41°C, irritability, a fast and weak pulse, and even delirium, coma and other sepsis symptoms. Symptoms of meningeal irritation may also occur. The patient often has anemia, dehydration, and acidosis.

2. Local symptoms

Periostitis causes local pain, local congestion and edema, and movement disorders. In the early stages of hematogenous osteomyelitis, there are severe local pain and throbbing pain, protective muscle spasms, and fear of limb movement. The affected area is swollen and tender. If the lesion is close to a joint, the joint may also swell, but the tenderness will not be significant. When the abscess penetrates the bone and periosteum to the subcutaneous tissue, it will fluctuate. After penetrating the skin, it will form a sinus tract that will not heal for a long time.

Muscles have protective spasms and the limbs dare not move

Differential Diagnosis

1. Cellulitis

The patient's systemic poisoning symptoms are relatively mild, but the local inflammation is more extensive and the area of tenderness is also larger.

2. Acute suppurative arthritis

Swelling and tenderness are in the joint space rather than at the bone ends, and joint mobility is almost completely lost. Joint cavity puncture and fluid extraction can confirm the diagnosis.
