What is the general diagnosis for baby rashes?

In addition to paying attention to the baby's physical health during the growth and development period, the baby's skin is also very delicate and prone to rashes. Rashes on the baby's skin can not only endanger the baby's health, but also easily lead to some skin problems. The type of rash can be determined based on the baby's skin symptoms or the baby's performance.

What is the general diagnosis for baby rashes?

Baby eczema

Infant eczema, commonly known as milk ringworm, is a common allergic skin inflammation caused by internal and external factors. Most babies start to develop eczema between 2 and 6 months old and it is more common in babies who are fed formula.

Characteristics of eczema: redness, dryness, patches, scaling, and obvious itching. In severe cases, there will be small cracks and even water seepage, hard scabs, slight redness and swelling, etc.

Treatment of eczema: Mild eczema generally does not require medication. After cleansing the skin, apply a low-sensitivity moisturizer (Cetaphil, Yumeijing, etc.); you can also buy hormone-free baby eczema cream for application.

Heat rash (prickly heat)

Heat rash, also known as prickly heat, is more common in summer, but can also occur in other seasons. In a hot and humid environment, sweat stays on the surface of the skin and is not easy to evaporate. It irritates the skin and causes heat rash, and secondary infection will form pustular rash.

Characteristics of heat rash: dense granular papules appear after exposure to heat, with mild desquamation after the rash subsides. Sometimes, there will be small, round and pointed superficial blisters or pustules the size of a needle tip, so some people will divide prickly heat into red prickly heat, pus prickly heat, etc. based on these characteristics. Heat rash in infants and young children is common on the head, face, neck, trunk, etc.

Treatment of heat rash: First of all, you need to strengthen care and never let your baby get hot again. After sweating, wipe it clean with clean water in time, then apply water-based moisturizer or liquid prickly heat water (do not use prickly heat powder); if the heat rash is severe, you can apply some astringent and anti-inflammatory drugs (such as calamine lotion) externally, and be careful not to let the baby scratch the skin. If your baby has serious skin problems such as impetigo, it is recommended that you go to the hospital to avoid more serious consequences after the ulceration.

Roseola infantum

Roseola infantum, also known as infantile roseola, is a common acute febrile rash disease in infants and young children. The peak age for roseola infantum is 6 months to 2 years old.

Characteristics of roseola infantum: After the child has had a fever for 3 to 5 days, the fever suddenly drops and a rose-red maculopapular rash appears on the skin. The diameter varies from 2 to 5 mm and fades when pressed. The rash usually occurs first on the face, neck and trunk, and then gradually spreads to the proximal limbs.

Treatment of roseola infantum: No treatment is required, it will usually disappear naturally after about 3 days. When diagnosing, it is important to remember that the red rash appears immediately after the high fever subsides after more than 3 days, which is called "rash after the fever subsides."

Baby acne

Infant acne is generally the most common neonatal acne. The reason is that the maternal hormone level transmitted to the baby through the placenta during the fetal period begins to decrease. As the estrogen level in the baby's body decreases, small pimple-like acne will break out on the skin.

Characteristics of infantile acne: It occurs within a few days to 4 weeks after birth, mainly on the cheeks, forehead and chin, mainly papules and pustules, occasionally blackheads, and rarely nodules and cysts. Papules, pustules, and blackheads generally resolve within a few weeks.

Treatment of baby acne: It will generally disappear on its own as the baby grows older and no treatment is required. But you need to strengthen care and be careful not to overheat.

Urticaria

Urticaria is commonly known as wheal, also called hives. It is a localized edema reaction caused by dilation of small blood vessels and increased permeability in the skin and mucous membranes. It usually subsides within 2 to 24 hours, and sometimes new rashes will occur repeatedly. The cause of urticaria is complex, and about 3/4 of patients cannot find the cause, which is related to allergies.

Characteristics of urticaria: Itchy skin often occurs first, and wheals appear after scratching. The wheals vary in size and shape, are raised above the skin with unclear boundaries, gradually spread and merge into patches, and can usually last from minutes to hours, leaving no trace after they subside.

Treatment of urticaria: If a child has occasional urticaria with mild symptoms, generally no treatment is required. If the condition is serious, it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately. If urticaria occurs repeatedly, it is best to find out the allergens and go to the hospital for allergen testing.

In addition to the common types of skin rashes mentioned above, babies may also have infectious diseases such as measles, rubella, chickenpox, scarlet fever, etc. When the baby's rash is serious and you cannot judge it yourself, do not use medicine indiscriminately. It is best to send your child to see a doctor as soon as possible.
