What is the reason for blood in sputum?

If there is blood in the sputum and you want to treat it effectively, you must first understand the cause, because many acute and chronic respiratory inflammations, such as common tuberculosis pneumonia, and some cardiovascular diseases may show symptoms of coughing up blood.

(1) Acute or chronic respiratory inflammation , such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, lung abscess, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary edema, etc.; (2) Cardiovascular disease, such as rheumatic heart disease, mitral valve stenosis, etc.;

(3) Tumors , which occur in the trachea, bronchi, lungs, mediastinum, and chest wall;

(4) Hemorrhagic diseases , such as leukemia, hemophilia, etc.

But the most common causes are bronchial disease, tuberculosis and lung cancer. Patients with bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis often have symptoms of hemoptysis, but most of them are small amounts of hemoptysis or blood in the sputum. Pulmonary tuberculosis may cause hemoptysis symptoms at different stages of its development. Most of the time, it is blood in the sputum or a small amount of hemoptysis. However, when the disease progresses and the lesions dissolve to form cavitary tuberculosis, it can cause rupture of small arteries and cause massive or even fatal hemoptysis.

Lung cancer usually presents with blood in sputum or a small amount of hemoptysis. Occasionally, when the tumor spreads and erodes larger blood vessels, especially arteries, fatal massive hemoptysis may occur.

If an elderly person suffers from hemoptysis at home, family members, friends and the patient himself should not panic. In particular, the patient should avoid fear and anxiety, because panic can worsen the bleeding and may cause choking.

When coughing up blood, the patient must remain calm and must spit out the blood. Never hold it in, as this will prevent the blood in the trachea or bronchi from being discharged, blocking the trachea and causing suffocation and death. Secondly, you must strictly rest in bed. If the location of the lesion is known, lie on the affected side to prevent blood from flowing into the healthy lung. Turning over and talking should be reduced as much as possible. If the cough is severe, you can take 2 tablets of codeine to suppress the cough and relieve hemoptysis. When sputum and blood are thick, you should increase your water intake and take expectorants. At the same time, you should immediately choose appropriate hemostatic agents, such as hemostatic, anloxin, etc. When taking hemostatic drugs, you should use anti-inflammatory drugs together with them.
