Neuroviral infection

Neuroviral infection

Neuroviral infection is a relatively serious infection problem. Because the main site of neuroviral infection is the human brain, if it is not treated in time, it will cause serious brain damage. The incidence of neuroviral infection is relatively high in young people because most young people do not pay much attention to protecting their bodies. So what are the physical symptoms when a person is infected with a neurological virus?

1. Symptoms of viral infection of the nervous system

Viral infections of the nervous system often cause brainstem encephalitis and cryptococcal meningitis, which often occur in young adults, while tuberculous meningitis and viral meningitis are more common in adolescents, especially tuberculous meningitis, about 20% of which occur before the age of 5. Symptoms are often fever, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, or diarrhea, oral herpes, etc. Some patients with sporadic encephalitis have epilepsy as the first symptom. Symptoms of systemic infection and poisoning: high fever, aversion to cold or chills, irritability, muscle pain, general discomfort accompanied by respiratory and digestive tract symptoms such as sore throat, cough, abdominal pain, and anorexia. Tuberculous meningitis may cause low fever, depression, weight loss, etc.

Intracranial hypertension and meningeal irritation signs: All types may present with varying degrees of headache, vomiting, blurred vision, papilledema and other signs of intracranial hypertension and stiff neck, as well as positive Knig's sign and Brudzinski's sign and other signs of meningeal irritation. Neuropsychiatric symptoms: There may be disturbances of consciousness such as drowsiness, lethargy, delirium, and coma; there may be mental disorders such as emotional indifference, memory and thinking disorders, irritability, and mental abnormalities; there may also be disorders in movement, behavior, language, perception, etc., as well as varying degrees of intellectual impairment. Hemiplegia, strabismus or diplopia, blindness, asymmetric tendon reflexes and pathological nerve reflexes may occur.

2. Treatment principles for viral infections of the nervous system

The main purpose is to eliminate or inhibit pathogens, which often requires external intervention, such as antibacterial drugs and removal of lesions. It is also important to stimulate or promote appropriate improvements in the body's humoral and cellular immune mechanisms to enhance defense and repair capabilities. In addition, correcting or regulating pathophysiological mechanisms to reduce the damage of inflammatory reactions to target organs, protecting brain function, and paying attention to water and electrolyte balance are also extremely important auxiliary means of treatment.

3. Common viral infections of the nervous system

The most common ones are deoxyribonucleic acid viruses (DNA viruses) and ribonucleic acid viruses (RNA viruses). Viral encephalitis can be divided into acute, subacute and chronic encephalitis according to the severity of onset. According to the type of virus and the route of infection, it can be divided into arbovirus, enterovirus, respiratory virus, herpes virus encephalitis, etc. Depending on the incidence of the disease, it can be divided into epidemic and sporadic encephalitis. It is generally believed that acute encephalitis represents acute viral infection, while subacute or chronic onset such as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and corticostriatal spinal cord degeneration represent chronic viral infection.
