Traditional Chinese medicine has had an indelible status and far-reaching influence in our country from ancient times to the present. Therefore, the profoundness of traditional Chinese medicine is something we all yearn for. Traditional Chinese medicine treats illnesses by combining the four diagnostic methods of observation, auscultation, inquiry and palpation. The same disease may have different treatments. The same disease may have different symptoms. Here is how to identify a cough. A cough with sound but no phlegm is called a cough, which is caused by the damage and unclearness of lung qi; a cough with phlegm but no sound is called a cough, which is caused by spleen dampness; a cough with phlegm and sound is called a cough, which is caused by the stagnation of lung qi and spleen dampness. A new cough is mostly caused by external factors, while a long-term cough is mostly caused by internal injuries. Those who cough loudly and forcefully generally suffer from excess syndrome; those who cough weakly and shallowly generally suffer from deficiency syndrome. (1) If the cough is forceful and heavy, and the sputum is yellow and sticky, it is usually caused by exogenous wind-heat. If the sputum is white, thin, and there is clear runny nose, it is caused by exogenous wind-cold. (2) A weak cough with thick, yellow phlegm that is difficult to cough up and a dry and sore throat are symptoms of lung heat. (3) Dry cough without sputum or with little and thick sputum is usually caused by dryness or heat. (4) A tight, stuffy, and obstructed cough with a large amount of white sputum that is easy to cough up usually indicates a condition called damp sputum or phlegm-fluid syndrome. (5) A weak cough accompanied by shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, and clear, thin sputum is a symptom of lung qi deficiency. A weak cough that is more severe at night and accompanied by shortness of breath and back pain is often a symptom of lung and kidney deficiency. (6) A hoarse cough, dry cough with little sputum or blood in the sputum, hot flashes and dry throat indicate lung yin deficiency. (7) If the coughing occurs in paroxysms, lasting 10 to 20 times, and ends with a long sound in the throat, like a bird’s cry, the disease is called whooping cough. (8) If the cough sounds like a dog barking and there is a white film in the throat that is difficult to peel off, it is called diphtheria. This disease is mostly caused by lung and kidney yin deficiency and fire poison attacking the throat. By distinguishing the above eight types of cough sounds, can you correctly view and distinguish coughs? Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the lungs control the skin and hair and are related to all the meridians. If the skin is invaded by evil spirits, the lungs will not be able to better play their role in the body. The human body is more prone to coughing. The different abilities and degrees of invasion of evil spirits on the collective result in different types of coughs, such as the eight types mentioned above. |
