Function (1) Dispersing wind-heat: It is used to treat wind-heat colds and red and swollen eyes, often with chrysanthemum. It is made of Sang Ma Wan with black sesame seeds and is used to treat dizziness and blurred vision caused by liver-yin deficiency and liver-yang hyperactivity. (3) Clearing the lungs and moistening dryness: Used for lung heat and dry cough: This herb is bitter and cold in nature, clears lung heat, is sweet and cold in nature, nourishes yin, and cools and moistens the lungs. Therefore, it can be used for dry heat damaging the lungs, dry cough with little sputum. For mild cases, it can be used with apricot kernel, radix adenophorae, fritillaria, etc., such as mulberry and apricot soup; for severe cases, it can be used with gypsum, ophiopogon japonicus, donkey-hide gelatin, etc. 2. Pharmacological Action 1. Mulberry leaves have an antispasmodic effect. 2. Mulberry leaves have anti-pathogenic microbial effects. In vitro tests showed that mulberry leaf decoction had a certain inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Escherichia coli. In addition, it can also kill Leptospira. 3. Mulberry leaves have anti-inflammatory effects. 4. Mulberry leaves have the effect of lowering blood sugar. The ecdysterone it contains has a hypoglycemic effect on increased blood sugar induced by various methods and can promote the conversion of glucose into glycogen, but does not change the blood sugar of normal animals. 5. Mulberry leaves have the effect of lowering blood pressure. When mulberry leaf extract was injected into the femoral vein of anesthetized dogs, a temporary decrease in blood pressure occurred, but breathing was not affected. 6. Mulberry leaves have an effect on smooth muscles. They have an excitatory effect on the estrous uterus of animals and an inhibitory effect on the intestinal muscles of mice. 7. Mulberry leaves also have the effects of lowering blood lipids and promoting diuresis. 3. Selection 1) Treat wind-heat in Taiyin meridians, with cough, mild fever, and slight thirst: 2 qian of almonds, 1.5 qian of forsythia, 8 fen of peppermint, 2.5 qian of mulberry leaves, 1 qian of chrysanthemum, 2 qian of bitter stems, 8 fen of licorice (raw), and 2 qian of reed root. Boil two cups of water and take one cup, take twice a day. (Sangju Drink from Treatise on Febrile Diseases) 2) Treat tears under the eyes caused by wind: Do not drop mulberry leaves in the twelfth lunar month. Boil them into a decoction and wash the eyes with the warm water every day, or add Glauber's salt. (Binghu Collection of Prescriptions) 3) Washing eyes for wind-heat swelling and pain, dry and red eyes: Use two iron fans, pour half a cup of boiling water into it, cover it, and wait until the water is warm. When it turns yellow-green like strong tea, it is ready. Then wash your eyes and wipe them dry. After one or two hours, warm the medicine in a bowl of water and wash again. Do this three to five times a day. (《Yangsuyuan Prescription》) 4) Treat liver yin deficiency, blurred vision, persistent cough, rough skin and nails, numbness and insensitivity: 1 jin of young mulberry leaves (remove the stems, wash, dry and grind into powder), 4 liang of black sesame seeds (wash and clean). Crush sesame seeds, boil down to a thick juice, add one pound of white honey, refine until drops of water form beads, add mulberry leaf powder and make into pills the size of sycamore seeds.
