What causes anal pain after defecation?

In our lives, many people experience anal pain after defecation. There are many reasons for this phenomenon, the most common ones are anal fissures, hemorrhoids, anal sinusitis, anal cancer, etc.

Anal fissure

When the patient defecates, the nerve endings in the anal fissure are stimulated, causing burning or knife-like pain in the anal canal. The painful stimulation causes the internal anal sphincter to contract and cause persistent pain. As time goes by, the anal sphincter relaxes, the pain is reduced and gradually disappears. If the pain reappears after the next bowel movement, it forms recurrent pain. This phenomenon is called anal fissure periodic pain.

Hemorrhoids are soft venous masses formed by the expansion and bending of the venous plexus under the mucosa of the terminal rectum and the skin of the anal canal. Hemorrhoids referred to in medicine include internal hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoids, and mixed hemorrhoids. Common symptoms include painless bleeding in the stool, bright red blood after intermittent bowel movements, rectal pain, prolapse of swelling inside the anus, and itching of the anus and perianal skin.

Anal sinusitis

Anal sinusitis generally presents as slight pain and distension in the anus. During defecation, the stool presses on the inflamed anal sinus, causing burning pain in the anus. If the sphincter contracts due to stimulation, the pain will intensify and radiate to the buttocks and posterior thigh. The local inflammation of anal sinusitis spreads when the body's resistance is reduced, and can further develop into perianal abscess.

Anal cancer

In the early stage of anal canal cancer, there is a tumor at the anal margin or anal canal with no obvious symptoms. Further development mainly manifests as persistent anal pain, aggravated pain after defecation, increased frequency of bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete defecation, and a small amount of blood in the stool, which is similar to common diseases such as anal fissure.
