Complications of hyaluronic acid temple augmentation

2. Early complications after hyaluronic acid injection

2) Nodules and lumps appear at the injection site. First of all, the nature of the injection must be clarified. If it is sodium hyaluronate gel, the lump will generally soften naturally in about three days.

3) Itching at the injection site. This could be caused by the disinfectant, or the patient could be allergic to the injection.

4) Pigmentation. This may be caused by the doctor's poor injection skills and shallow injection.

5) Injection site infection. This usually occurs 72 hours or more after surgery, and pus spots can be seen forming under the epidermis. This is often related to incomplete disinfection before surgery, or improper care such as applying makeup or getting wet immediately after surgery, which may cause bacterial infection.

3. Preventive measures for long-term complications of hyaluronic acid injection

1) Overfilling. The incidence rate is highest in the tear trough area, because the depression in the filling area is shallow, the skin texture is thinner, and there is a certain resistance during injection. If improper force is used, local rice-like protrusions may easily occur.

2) Absorption and displacement of injected material. It often occurs in the temple, nose or cheek. The forehead and temporal regions are usually injected in the loose layer under the superficial temporal fascia. When a large amount is injected, the injected material is easily displaced due to gravity, which should be taken seriously.

3) Periodic redness and swelling in the injection area. Redness and swelling occur regularly at the injection area, with an interval of 2 weeks or 1 month.

4) Chronic granuloma at the injection site. This type of complication is rare, but has been reported in foreign literature, and there are also cases of pseudocyst formation.

5) Acne or erythema at the injection site. It often occurs when the injection dose is high and the injection layer is shallow. The local skin is in a tight and shiny state, and the erythema may last for several months.

6) Vascular compression or embolism. Hyaluronic acid injections often occur in the frown lines, nasolabial folds, and nose tip. Because these areas are rich in blood vessels and have extensive communicating branches with terminal supply arterioles such as the ophthalmic artery and dorsal nasal artery, injection can easily cause direct vascular embolism, which can lead to blindness, necrosis of the nose tip, and partial necrosis of the upper lip.
