How to flip your eyelids

How to flip your eyelids

Many people do not know how to flip their eyelids. Flipping the eyelids is quite useful in life. For example, if there is a foreign object in the eye, you will feel the friction of the foreign object, which often causes tears to flow and makes it impossible to remove the foreign object. At this time, you can flip up the eyelids, find the foreign object, and take it out. In hospitals, this method is often used for some treatments. The most common methods of flipping the eyelids are single-handed method and double-handed method.

How to flip your eyelids

When examining the palpebral and forniceal conjunctiva, the eyelids must be everted. It is relatively easy to turn over the lower eyelid. Pull the lower eyelid downward with the thumb or index finger, and ask the subject to look up at the same time, and the conjunctiva of the lower eyelid will be completely exposed. There are two ways to turn up the upper eyelid.

One-handed method :

It is more commonly used. First, ask the person being examined to look down, place the index finger on the concave part of the upper eyelid, place the thumb in front of the tarsal plate close to the eyelid margin, and then pinch the eyelid skin and other soft tissues with two fingers. While pulling the eyelid forward and downward, gently press down with the index finger and twist the eyelid upward with the thumb, and the upper eyelid will be turned over. This method only requires one hand to operate, which is simple and easy.

Two-handed method.

Ask the subject to look downward, pinch the eyelashes and eyelid skin in the center of the eyelid with the thumb and index finger of one hand, and pull them forward and downward, and place the index finger of the other hand in the concave part under the eyebrow. When the eyelashes and eyelid edge are pulled forward and upward, the eyelid will be turned over by slightly pressing downward with the fingers in the concave part under the eyebrow. If this method fails to flip the upper eyelid, a glass rod or probe can be used instead of the finger in the depression under the eyebrow to make it easier to flip.

When checking the conjunctiva of the fornix, after turning over the upper eyelid, press the eyelid margin against the orbital rim with the thumb and pull it upward. At the same time, ask the subject to look downward with force, and use another finger to gently push the eyeball upward on the lower eyelid. The upper fornix will then be completely exposed. For patients with corneal ulcers and eyeball perforations, avoid compressing the eyeball to avoid causing greater damage.
