Precautions for polio vaccination

Precautions for polio vaccination

As the name suggests, the polio vaccine is used to prevent polio. Polio means poliomyelitis. Polio is a terrible disease. Once contracted, it can cause great harm to the body. Because polio often occurs in children, we also call polio infantile paralysis. Polio is difficult to treat.

Polio is relatively easy to prevent. As long as we use the polio vaccine, we can effectively prevent polio. Therefore, we don’t have to be afraid of the occurrence of polio. Just take preventive measures.

The polio vaccine, known as the "sugar pill," looks and tastes like marbles, but its effects are very different. The small sugar pill is a hero in preventing polio. The reason why it is so effective is mainly because the vaccine is made of live attenuated polio virus. After children take it, the virus can continue to multiply in the body, thereby stimulating the body to produce antibodies to resist the polio virus. Therefore, you must be very careful when taking sugar pills. If you are not careful, it will be in vain. You must not be careless. Special attention should be paid to the following points:

(1) Pay attention to the age of children when taking the vaccine

The first age for taking sugar pills is the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th month after the baby is born (note that the interval between each dose is 1 month). After that, take one more dose at 1.5 to 2 years old (18 to 24 months) and 4 years old.

(2) Must be taken with cold water

When taking the medicine for infants, be sure to crush the sugar pill with a spoon and dissolve it in cold boiled water before taking. Older children can swallow it directly. Avoid taking the medicine with hot water, because hot water can kill the attenuated live virus and fail to achieve the desired immune effect.

(3) No need to take with breast milk

Breast milk contains antibodies that fight viruses and can render sugar pills ineffective, so do not take sugar pills right after breastfeeding. It is generally best to take them 2 hours after breastfeeding. Stop breastfeeding within 30 minutes after taking the sugar pill.

(4) Take more medicine after vomiting

Some children cry or vomit after taking the sugar pills and need to take the pills again. Parents should watch their children swallow all the sugar pills.

(5) Sugar pills need to be refrigerated

Sugar pills must be stored at low temperature. If stored at -20℃, the shelf life is 2 years; if stored at 2-10℃, the shelf life is 5 months; if stored at 20-22℃, the shelf life is 10 days; if stored at 30-32℃, it can only be stored for 2 days. If you cannot take the pill for special reasons, be sure to put the pill in the refrigerator, but it is best to swallow it immediately after receiving it.

(6) Understand contraindications

It is contraindicated for patients with immunodeficiency disease, leukemia, malignant tumors or those taking immunosuppressants. Patients with high fever, diarrhea, repeated severe infections, acute infectious diseases, and tuberculosis should temporarily suspend the use of the medicine, and still need to take it after recovery.

Above we introduced what polio is. We know that polio is what we often call polio. It is very difficult to treat polio. Fortunately, we have a very good method to prevent polio, which is to inject polio vaccine. The above article also introduced the details that need to be paid attention to during the injection.
