What is the white stuff on the cornea?

The cornea is a very important part of the human eye. When there is an abnormality in the cornea, it will directly affect people's vision and cause great damage to the eyes. If you observe carefully, you may find some white things on the cornea. The cause of this situation is quite complicated. Many people don’t know what the white things on the cornea are. It is recommended to check and treat.

1. Leukoma

The cornea is located at the front end of the eye's refractive system. It is often exposed to the air and comes into contact with bacteria, viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms, making it more prone to infection and trauma. Corneal leukoma is a localized white opacity left over from various corneal diseases. If white spots occur in the pupil area, they will damage vision. Corneal leukoplakia occurs in infancy and is prone to deprivational amblyopia.

2. Impact

Corneal leukoplakia is the most common disease in ophthalmology. It can be caused by infection or trauma. It not only affects the appearance but also the visual function, especially it causes great harm to the patient's physical and mental health. If not treated in time, more and more new blood vessels will appear on the leukoplakia, affecting the efficacy of later treatment. Therefore, timely corneal transplantation surgery can not only play a cosmetic role, but also increase vision.

3. Others

Corneal leukoma is a complication of infectious corneal disease or corneal trauma. When the corneal ulcer reaches the cleansing stage, the connective tissue in the cornea proliferates to repair the defect, the ulcer heals, and a scar is formed. If the ulcer is small and shallow and only affects the epithelial cell layer, the cornea can completely regain its transparency. If the Descemet's membrane and the superficial layers of the corneal parenchyma are affected, a dense, cloudy scar will remain. The turbidity is dark at first, then increases in concentration but never passes beyond the edge of the ulcer. The disappearance of corneal scars is only limited to infants. It is impossible for older children to do so, and permanent scars will inevitably remain, causing visual impairment.
