What is an overbite?

Overbite, also known as anterior crossbite, is one of the common dental deformities in clinical practice. It is mainly caused by some bad habits, so there are more acquired factors and some congenital genetic factors. If parents have overbite or jaw malformation, their children may also have this disease. It's more of a bad habit. When children are young, they bite their fingers, which will cause their lower jaw to stretch forward, leading the mandible to develop forward. Over time, excessive development will lead to deformity. After the teeth come out, the mandibular teeth are in front of the maxillary teeth, and an overbite is formed, covering the upper teeth. Under normal circumstances, the upper jaw covers the lower jaw teeth, and the development of the lower jaw is restricted by the upper jaw. Now that there is no force to stop the growth of the mandible, the condition of the overbite will become more and more serious.

Causes of overbite teeth

1. Genetic factors:

Anterior crossbite has a clear familial tendency. According to relevant data, nearly half of the patients with anterior crossbite have similar malocclusions among their blood relatives of one to three generations. Malocclusion is a multi-gene genetic disease that is affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Congenital diseases: Congenital cleft lip and palate is one of the important causes of anterior crossbite. Cleft lip and palate affects the proliferation of bone sutures and the surface proliferation of bones. At the same time, surgical intervention has certain restrictions on jaw development. Among the malocclusions associated with cleft lip and palate, the most common is anterior crossbite or full arch crossbite caused by insufficient development of the maxillary bone. 2. Acquired causes: (1) Systemic diseases: Hyperpituitarism produces excessive growth hormone. If it persists until after the epiphyseal fusion, or if the disease occurs after the epiphyseal fusion, it may manifest as acromegaly, mandibular protrusion, anterior teeth or complete dental arch crossbite. Rickets is caused by vitamin D deficiency, which affects calcium and phosphorus metabolism and leads to bone metabolism disorder. It can also manifest as anterior crossbite and open bite due to mandibular developmental deformity. (2) Respiratory diseases: Chronic tonsillitis, enlarged and swollen adenoids. In order to keep the airway open and reduce pressure and stimulation, the tongue often extends forward and drives the mandible forward, forming anterior crossbite and mandibular protrusion. (3) Local disorders of deciduous teeth and the period of replacement teeth: Caries of deciduous teeth and the local disorders of deciduous teeth and the period of replacement teeth caused by it are an important acquired cause of the formation of anterior crossbite.
