Can gout patients eat freshwater fish?

Freshwater fish are rich in nutrients, high in protein and fat, and have tender meat, making them popular among people. However, even though freshwater fish is a very good meat, given the strict dietary requirements of gout patients, they usually have many concerns when eating freshwater fish, fearing that it will affect their condition. So, can people with gout eat freshwater fish? Let’s take a closer look below.

Generally speaking, for gout patients, the key to adjusting their diet is to control the intake of purine. Fish contains purine, especially marine fish, such as hairtail. The purine content in freshwater fish is lower than that in marine fish.

It is recommended that gout patients should be moderate when eating fish, pay attention to the amount of fish they eat, and eat as little as possible. Although the purine content in freshwater fish is relatively low, consuming too much can easily cause high serum uric acid in the body.

It is recommended that patients who want to eat fish should keep the freshwater fish in clean water for 2-3 days before killing it after buying it home. It is best to soak the killed fish in clean water for about an hour to evaporate the remaining toxins in the fish as much as possible and reduce the harm of toxic substances to the body. Cooking should be done several hours after the fish has died, because after being left for a period of time, the connective tissue of the fish begins to soften gradually, and the meat becomes delicious and fragrant. Cooking at this time will taste great.
