Pregnant women need to undergo regular prenatal checkups during pregnancy to ensure their health and prevent various problems in their children. The glucose tolerance test is one of the more important examination items. The glucose tolerance test, also known as the glucose screening test, can detect the blood sugar level in the body to check whether women have gestational diabetes. Before the glucose tolerance test, pregnant women need to pay attention to some relevant matters. Here are some precautions before the glucose tolerance test. 1. What is a sugar screening test? "Glucose screening" is the abbreviation for gestational diabetes screening. If the sugar screening is high-risk, doctors will generally recommend continuing to do glucose tolerance tests to confirm whether there is pregnancy complicated with diabetes. Severe sugar screening can threaten the life safety of mother and baby. Diabetes during pregnancy can cause many harms to pregnant women and fetuses, and in severe cases it can threaten the lives of mothers and babies. 2. Precautions before sugar screening 1. Reduce the intake of starch and sugar two weeks before the examination: Try to eat less staple food and pasta, and the amount of staple food such as rice and flour should not exceed half a pound a day. It is best not to drink rice porridge in the morning, you can use milk instead. Do not eat high-fat foods and try not to eat sugary foods. Sugary foods here refer to sweets, beverages, and even fruits containing refined sugar that can be directly absorbed by the human body without any conversion, such as: chocolate, cola, lychees, sugar cane, large amounts of watermelons, etc. The amount of fruit you eat should be limited, especially those with high sugar content. Don't eat eggs for dinner. Eat more vegetables, no less than 500 grams per day, to supplement vitamins and fiber. Drink plenty of water and exercise moderately. Take a walk after meals to burn off excess sugar. 2. The day before the sugar screening or glucose tolerance test, it is best to eat light vegetarian food and eat less rice. 3. Do not eat after 8 pm the night before the sugar screening and drink less water. 4. Pregnant women are advised to prepare some food and eat it after completing the sugar screening to avoid prolonged hunger and causing physical discomfort. 3. Specific steps of sugar screening Method for sugar screening for pregnant women: draw blood once on an empty stomach, take 50g of glucose orally, and measure blood sugar level 1 hour later. If it is ≥7.8mmol/L, the sugar screening is abnormal. Further glucose tolerance testing is needed. Glucose tolerance method: Generally, 75g of sugar is taken orally after fasting for 12 hours. Fasting blood sugar and blood sugar are measured four times at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after taking the sugar. The normal values are no higher than 5.6, 10.3, 8.6, and 6.7mmol/L, respectively. If two or more of these blood sugar levels are higher than normal, gestational diabetes can be diagnosed. |
