What is the difference between laryngeal stridor and laryngeal wheezing?

Laryngeal gurgling and laryngeal stridor are both relatively common diseases, but many people tend to confuse laryngeal gurgling and stridor. In fact, whether it is laryngeal gurgling or stridor, parents must pay attention to it. These two diseases will have a great impact on the baby's physical health. Some babies may have difficulty breathing, some may have difficulty swallowing, etc. If these are not treated in time, it will affect the baby's growth and development.

What are the symptoms of laryngeal stridor in children?

Symptoms of congenital laryngeal stridor

The baby's throat often makes gurgling sounds, which makes parents very worried and confused, not knowing what's wrong with their baby. If your baby has this condition, it may be congenital laryngeal stridor. Many new parents, do you know the symptoms of congenital laryngeal stridor in babies? 1. After the baby is born, there will be a stridor sound when inhaling; 2. When inhaling, there will be depressions in the suprasternal fossa, supraclavicular fossa on both sides, and the lower intercostal space; 3. The stridor sound in the throat will worsen when the baby is crying or moving; 4. A very small number of babies will experience respiratory distress, feeding difficulties, etc.

Causes of congenital laryngeal stridor

Congenital laryngeal stridor is a congenital disease, and there are many causes of congenital laryngeal stridor. The larynx of a normal person is supported by cartilage to ensure the patency of the respiratory tract. However, due to malnutrition during pregnancy, calcium deficiency or other reasons, the laryngeal cartilage of a newborn is poorly developed and cannot play a supporting role. In this way, the tissues of the larynx will collapse during inhalation, causing obstruction of the airway and causing wheezing. In addition, there are some special disease factors that cause stridor, such as congenital laryngeal and tracheal developmental abnormalities, large blood vessel abnormalities, congenital laryngeal cysts, tumors, etc., which can all cause stridor. Stridor caused by these factors requires surgical treatment.

What to do about congenital laryngeal stridor

It is sometimes difficult to avoid congenital laryngeal stridor in babies. What should you do if you find out that your baby really has this disease after observing the symptoms or taking him to the hospital for examination? In fact, most congenital laryngeal stridor does not require special treatment. Usually when the baby grows to 2 to 3 years old, the laryngeal cartilage will gradually develop and the laryngeal space will widen accordingly - generally there will be improvement around 6 months, and for most babies the sound will disappear around 2 years old, and most symptoms can be relieved on their own. Therefore, for babies with congenital laryngeal stridor, they should pay attention to preventing colds, try to prevent respiratory infections, and increase nutrition. During this period, your baby should also increase outdoor activities and get more sun exposure. Start supplementing with vitamin D (i.e. cod liver oil) 400 units/day 2 weeks after birth until the age of 2 to promote calcium absorption and synthesis. However, if the baby is in a state of malnutrition for a long time, accompanied by feeding difficulties, or repeated respiratory tract infections, respiratory distress, shortness of breath, choking and reflux, etc., you need to go to the hospital for treatment in time. Occasionally, babies with severe laryngeal obstruction may need timely tracheotomy to relieve the symptoms.
