Symptoms of sciatic nerve compression

Symptoms of sciatic nerve compression

There are many common symptoms of sciatic nerve, such as lumbar disc herniation, difficulty bending the waist, and inability to walk. If patients have these symptoms, it is recommended that they rest immediately and avoid strenuous exercise and excessive fatigue. Your daily diet should also be light, with more vegetables and fruits. So what are the symptoms of sciatic nerve compression? Are they the same as the symptoms of sciatic nerve compression?

Consider whether the symptoms of sciatica pain and discomfort are caused by compression of the nerves due to lumbar disease. Sciatica is a group of pain symptoms that occur along the sciatic nerve pathway, namely the waist, buttocks, back of thigh, posterior and lateral side of the calf, and outer side of the foot. Radicular sciatica is often triggered by exertion, bending over, or strenuous activity.

Sciatica is a group of painful symptoms that occur along the sciatic nerve pathway, namely the lower back, buttocks, back of the thigh, posterior and lateral sides of the calf, and outer side of the foot.

Radicular sciatica often has an acute or subacute onset due to factors such as exertion, bending over, or strenuous activity. The pain often radiates from the waist to one side of the buttocks, back of the thigh, popliteal fossa, outer side of the calf and foot, and is burning or knife-like. The pain may be aggravated by coughing or exerting force, and is worse at night. To avoid nerve traction and compression, special pain-relieving postures are often adopted, such as lying on the healthy side with hip and knee flexed when sleeping, and focusing on the healthy side when standing. Over time, scoliosis will occur, with the spine bending more toward the healthy side, and when sitting, the buttocks will tilt toward the healthy side to reduce pressure on the nerve roots.

For dry sciatica, the onset speed varies depending on the cause. If it is caused by cold or trauma, the onset is usually acute. The pain often radiates from the buttocks to the back of the thigh, the posterolateral side of the calf, and the outer side of the foot. The pain worsens with walking, movement, and traction on the sciatic nerve. Scoliosis often bends toward the affected side to reduce the traction on the sciatic nerve trunk.

Common symptoms of sciatica:

(1) The pain is mainly limited to the sciatic nerve distribution area, the posterior thigh, the posterior and lateral part of the calf, and the foot. Patients with severe pain may adopt a unique posture: bending their waist, bending their knees, and standing on their toes. If the lesion is located at the nerve root, the pain will worsen when the pressure in the spinal canal increases (coughing, straining).

(2) The degree of muscle weakness can vary greatly depending on the cause, location of the lesion, and the extent of the damage. The muscles innervated by the sciatic nerve may be completely or partially weak or paralyzed.

(3) There may or may not be tenderness over the sciatic nerve trunk at the sciatic notch.

(4) There is a sciatic nerve traction sign, and the Lasegue sign and its equivalent sign are positive. The presence of this sign is often parallel to the severity of the pain. This symptom may disappear after local anesthesia of the sciatic nerve root or nerve trunk.

(5) The Achilles tendon reflex is reduced or disappears, and the knee reflex may increase due to stimulation.

(6) There may be a decrease or disappearance of various sensations in the area innervated by the sciatic nerve, including a decrease in vibration sensation at the lateral ankle, or there may be very mild sensory impairment.
