What is the difference between silver bupleurum and bupleurum

There are many traditional Chinese medicines in our country, but people still know very little about the various types of traditional Chinese medicines. Unless one is a professional researcher of traditional Chinese medicines, many similar traditional Chinese medicines are often easily confused. For example, there is a Chinese medicine called Bupleurum and another called Silver Bupleurum. Although they only differ by one character, they are actually two different Chinese medicinal materials. So, what is the difference between silver bupleurum and bupleurum?

Compared with silver bupleurum, you may have heard of bupleurum more often. Some people also think that silver bupleurum and bupleurum are the same medicine. So is there any difference between the two?

Silver Bupleurum and Bupleurum are two completely different Chinese medicinal materials, which are very different in terms of origin, properties, chemical composition, nature and taste, meridians, functions and indications.

Pharmacist's analysis: Bupleurum chinense belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family, and the medicinal part is the dried root after removing the fibrous roots. It has the effect of clearing away heat and eliminating malnutrition fever. The general dosage is 3-10 grams.

Bupleurum is a plant of the Umbelliferae family, and its medicinal part is the dried root after removing the stems and leaves. It has the effects of dispersing fever, soothing the liver and raising yang. The general dosage is 3-10 grams. Common names include northern bupleurum, red bupleurum, and bupleurum head.

Silver Bupleurum and Bupleurum are two traditional Chinese medicines that come from different families and plants and have different effects. Both silver bupleurum and bupleurum can reduce fever, but silver bupleurum is the key medicine for clearing malnutrition heat, and is better for treating yin deficiency, bone steaming and hot flashes, and is suitable for those with deficiency heat. Chaihu is good at eliminating evil that is half superficial and half interior, and is an important medicine for treating typhoid fever where evil enters the Shaoyang meridian. It is most suitable for those with colds, fever, and alternating symptoms of cold and heat.

Among the medicinal bupleurum, there is one called soft bupleurum, which is the dried root with seedlings of the narrow-leaved bupleurum of the Umbelliferae family of the genus Bupleurum. It is also known as spring bupleurum and fine bupleurum.

Because silver Bupleurum looks similar to Bupleurum, it has been confused with Bupleurum for a long time in history. With the development of traditional Chinese medicine, silver bupleurum and bupleurum were gradually separated from their origin to their functions and indications.
