Does my husband's smoking affect pregnancy?

Does my husband's smoking affect pregnancy?

Modern men are under great pressure at work. For many men, drinking and smoking are the most common phenomena in order to socialize at work. Many men smoke to relieve their own stress. But everyone knows that smoking has many bad effects on the body. For example, smoking can easily cause lung cancer. In fact, in addition to affecting lung cancer, smoking will also affect male fertility. It is best for men not to smoke.

What are the effects of men smoking on the fetus?

Nicotine in tobacco can inhibit the secretion of sex hormones and kill sperm. At the same time, nicotine in tobacco can hinder the combination of sperm and egg, greatly reducing the chance of pregnancy in women. The normal sperm value of smokers is lower than that of non-smokers. At the same time, it is also found that the sperm deformity rate is related to the amount of smoking. The number of normal sperm in male smokers decreases, by an average of about 10%.

If you smoke 21 to 30 cigarettes a day, the incidence of abnormal sperm increases significantly. If you smoke more than 30 cigarettes a day, the incidence of abnormal sperm is even higher. The longer you smoke, the more abnormal sperm you will have, and as the number of normal sperm decreases, sperm motility will also weaken. This will not only reduce the pregnancy rate, but also affect the quality of offspring.

Tobacco concentrate contains carcinogens, which are also present in the body fluids of smokers. When sperm is exposed to these carcinogens, genetic damage may easily occur. The birth rate of congenital malformations in pregnant women whose husbands smoke is about 2.5 times higher than that in women whose husbands do not smoke. If the husband smokes and does not avoid it, the pregnant woman will also inhale the tar and nicotine floating in the air.

The harm of smoking to the fetus

1. For female smokers, the harmful substances in cigarettes will directly invade the placenta, damage its function, and reduce the secretion of progesterone in the body. Therefore, the incidence of miscarriage is much higher than that of non-smokers.

2. Pregnant women who actively or passively smoke during pregnancy have three or four times the chance of stillbirth than non-smoking pregnant women.

3. As harmful substances in cigarettes enter the mother's blood, it will cause a decrease in blood oxygen content. The fetus is prone to growth retardation due to lack of oxygen in the womb, and the birth weight will be lower than normal.

We all know that smoking is harmful to health, so pregnant mothers should try to avoid places with smoky smell to reduce the chance of inhaling secondhand smoke. If fathers like to smoke, it is best not to smoke at home to avoid secondhand smoke causing harm to the fetus. Of course, it would be better to quit smoking directly during this period. I hope all pregnant mothers can spend their pregnancy safely in a safe and healthy environment.
