What to do if you stutter

What should we do if a child stutters, especially if the child is just learning to speak? Stuttering will make parents very worried. They are afraid that the child will continue to stutter and it will be difficult to correct it when they grow up. They are also afraid that it will affect the child’s future life and work as well as the healthy physical and mental growth. Therefore, parents need to teach their children patiently and correct their children’s mistakes imperceptibly. It is best to let the children develop a correct way of speaking without them realizing it.

It is generally easier to correct a child's stuttering, especially for children who have just learned to speak. At this time, the child does not know what is right and wrong. Some children learn to stutter from adults, so this is the most effective way to correct a child's speech. Here we will introduce what to do if a child stutters and what methods can be used to correct a child's stuttering problem. I hope it will be helpful to you.

Stuttering is treatable. First of all, it should be noted that during the peak period of learning to speak for children over 2 years old, there will sometimes be repetitions of speech and interruptions of sentences. This is a natural phenomenon in the child's development process, generally called "temporary stuttering". As the child grows and matures, most of them can be corrected naturally. However, parents should pay attention to eliminating factors in the surrounding environment that may cause stuttering, and help children correct stuttering in the following ways: First, find out the cause. If there are stutterers around, children should try to avoid them. If parents have problems with their attitude towards their children's stuttering, they should correct it in time and not be impatient. The more they scold or prohibit, the more nervous the child will become, and the worse the stuttering will become. Secondly, you can use diversion to distract the child with games or other topics; or you can sing the words that the child often stutters, make them into songs, sing them with tunes, and let the child learn along; parents can also recite songs with their children. During this process, timely encouragement can be given to the child's progress to increase his confidence in correcting stuttering.

How to correct stuttering in children:

(1) When a child stutters, parents should not yell at them or laugh at them. Instead, they should be good at guiding them and not rush them. Parents should know that patience is the most important thing in this situation.

(2) Find ways to reduce children’s psychological pressure and maintain a good mental state. If the child's stuttering gets better, parents should give encouragement as soon as possible to enhance the child's confidence in overcoming stuttering.

(3) When conducting language training, be sure to practice pronunciation when the muscles are relaxed, slow down the speaking speed, extend the speaking time, and repeat the training.

(4) Try to avoid contact with children who stutter to avoid mutual influence.

The causes of stuttering in children include:

(1) When a child is just beginning to learn to speak, if he often imitates the speech of children or adults who stutter, he will eventually develop a stutter.

(2) Parents are too strict or impatient with their children’s speech, or people around them often laugh at the way their children speak. This causes the children to become very nervous when speaking and to be afraid of making mistakes, which can eventually lead to stuttering.

(3) Some people believe that left-handed children will often stutter if their parents force them to use their right hand.

(4) Some stuttering has a family history.

We all know what to do when you stutter. You might as well try the above methods on your children. Perhaps your children will be able to correct it. If there are adults in the family who stutter, try not to let the stutterer teach the children. Adults also need to correct their behavior in time to help children speak better.
