Sudden Neonatal Death Syndrome

Sudden Neonatal Death Syndrome

For parents, welcoming the arrival of a new life is a very happy thing, and when a new life comes into this world, parents often do their best to take care of their baby. If a baby dies suddenly during growth, it will be a fatal blow to the parents. But there is a phenomenon called sudden neonatal death syndrome, which mainly refers to the sudden death of infants before one year old. Next, I will give parents a detailed introduction to what sudden neonatal death syndrome is.

1. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of death in infants under 1 year old. SIDS is difficult to understand because it is not a single disease but a phenomenon used to describe the sudden death of an infant under one year old, and the cause of death cannot be determined after a comprehensive medical and legal investigation (including autopsy). Sudden infant death usually occurs suddenly without any warning, bringing great pain and shock to the family.

2. Causes of Sudden Infant Death

No one knows exactly what causes sudden infant death. Researchers have learned a lot about sudden infant death over the past 30 years, but there are still no definitive answers as to why it occurs. Many experts believe that SIDS occurs because babies with underlying abnormalities (such as a brain defect that affects breathing) are placed on their stomachs to sleep, or because they are exposed to environmental factors such as secondhand smoke during a critical period of development. Experts have been studying the brain, the autonomic nervous system, infant care and sleep environment, infectious diseases and immunity, and genetics to find the causes of sudden infant death.

3. Prevention of Sudden Infant Death

1. Sleep on your back

Since the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Association and others jointly launched the "Supine Sleeping" campaign in 1994, the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome has dropped by 40%.

2. Pay attention to your own and fetal health during pregnancy

In order to ensure the health of the baby and reduce the risk of premature and low-birth weight babies, attention should be paid to pregnancy care and nutrition.

3. Don’t let your baby be exposed to secondhand smoke

Keep the air around your baby smoke-free at home, in the car and in other environments.
