Peony root effects and contraindications

Peony root effects and contraindications

1. Effect on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases: Peony bark can increase coronary blood volume, reduce preload, and reduce left ventricular work in anesthetized dogs. It has a significant protective effect on experimental myocardial ischemia, and the effect lasts for a long time, while also reducing cardiac oxygen consumption.

2. Effects on the central nervous system: Paeonol has an antipyretic effect on fever in mice caused by oral administration of typhoid and paratyphoid vaccines, and reduces the body temperature of normal mice. Oral administration of paeonol can inhibit the writhing reaction and tail pressure pain reaction of mice induced by abdominal injection of acetic acid, resist the hyperactivity of exercise in mice induced by caffeine, significantly increase the sleeping time of mice induced by cyclohexylbarbital sodium, disappear the righting reflex of mice when used in large doses, and significantly resist the convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazol, strychnine, nicotine and electric shock. The efficacy is located in the porous structure of the cerebral cortex and the midbrain.

3. Anti-infection effect: Intragastric administration of paeonol can inhibit the edema of the paws of rats caused by dextran, acetic acid or carrageenan, and can inhibit the increase in capillary permeability of the abdomen of mice or the skin of guinea pigs caused by acetic acid or 5-5-hydroxytryptamine, and inhibit the occurrence of stress ulcers in mice.

4. Antibacterial effect: In vitro experiments show that peony bark decoction has a strong antibacterial effect on Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcal infection, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Vibrio cholerae, etc. The peony flower and leaf decoction has a significant antibacterial effect on Shigella dysenteriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, and its reasonable component is gallic acid.

5. Anticoagulant effect: In vitro experiments on human platelets showed that both peony bark water extract and peony phenol can inhibit the production of thromboxane A2 from platelet arachidonic acid, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation. This is due to the inhibition of the cyclooxygenase reaction from arachidonic acid to prostate H2. The ethanol extract of Paeonia suffruticosa has the effect of inhibiting the accumulation of toxins and causing experimental venous thrombosis.

6. Effect on human immune system: Oral administration of Paeonia suffruticosa moutan bark, paeonol, paeoniflorin, oxidized paeoniflorin and benzoylpeoniflorin to mice respectively increased the clearance rate of intravenously injected carbon particles in the blood, which was of positive significance even when the mononuclear phagocyte system function was at a low state. Microscopic examination showed that the phagocytic capacity of Kupffer cells in the liver and macrophages in the spleen was increased. This shows that Peony Root has the effect of improving blood and immune cells.

7. Effect on lipid metabolism: Paeonia lactiflora and the paeonol and paeoniflorin it contains have an inhibitory effect on the fat burning in adipocytes induced by adrenal hormones; Paeonia lactiflora water extract can increase the conversion of glucose into body fat in adipocytes, and continuously increase the conversion of glucose into body fat induced by glargine insulin.
