What not to eat after thyroid surgery

Surgery is a commonly used method after thyroid disease occurs. After surgery, you should pay attention to your diet. Because some foods should not be consumed after surgery. In addition, postoperative recovery and regular life are very important. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement nutrition to avoid unnecessary problems. What can’t I eat after thyroid surgery?

Nutritional principles

1. High-calorie, high-protein, high-vitamin hyperthyroidism patients need to increase their daily calorie supply by 50% to 70% compared to normal people. It is recommended to provide 3000 to 3500 kcal per day. According to eating habits, in addition to three meals a day, you should add 2 to 3 snacks. Physiological doses of thyroxine stimulate protein synthesis, while excessive thyroxine can accelerate protein breakdown and cause a negative nitrogen balance. Therefore, the protein supply should be increased to 1.5g per kilogram of body weight per day. Attention should be paid to the supply of vitamins, and it is advisable to provide rich multivitamins. You should choose foods rich in vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and vitamin C. Vitamin D is the main vitamin that ensures intestinal calcium and phosphorus absorption and its supply should be guaranteed.

2. Appropriate supplementation of calcium, phosphorus and potassium to prevent osteoporosis and pathological fractures. Especially for patients whose symptoms cannot be controlled for a long time or for the elderly, calcium and phosphorus supplements should be increased appropriately. When combined with hypokalemic periodic paralysis, potassium-rich foods should be used.

3. Avoid iodine. Iodine is the raw material for synthesizing thyroid hormones. Iodine can induce hyperthyroidism. Therefore, iodine should be avoided during the treatment stage or at the end of the hyperthyroidism treatment course.

4. When supplementing zinc and magnesium for hyperthyroidism, trace elements such as blood barium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and antimony are significantly reduced. In hyperthyroidism with hypokalemic periodic paralysis, magnesium is significantly reduced, which is the reason for persistent hypokalemia. In hyperthyroidism, due to increased intestinal motility, reduced zinc absorption, and loss of zinc in sweat, low zinc occurs. Low zinc is related to hair loss caused by hyperthyroidism, and can cause prolonged menstrual cycles or even amenorrhea. Low manganese can cause ovarian dysfunction, loss of libido and abnormal glucose tolerance.

Suitable food

1. Choice of staple food and beans: japonica rice, wheat, water chestnut, oats, buckwheat, sorghum, beans and their products, etc.

2. Choices of meat, eggs and milk: pork, beef, goose, rabbit, hare, duck, eel, carp, crucian carp, herring, abalone, loach, Wuchang fish, sea bass, turtle, snails, milk, mussels, eggs, etc.

3. Vegetables to choose from include radish, tomato, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, rapeseed, eggplant, bitter gourd, onion, shepherd's purse, pumpkin, watermelon, winter melon, cucumber, loofah, yam, lotus root, mustard greens, asparagus, bamboo shoots, day lily, black fungus, shiitake mushrooms, etc.

4. Fruit choices include olives, mulberries, pomegranates, sea buckthorn, papaya, hawthorn, apples, dates, and black plums.

5. Other peanuts, lilies, wolfberries, etc.;

Dietary taboos

1. Use foods with high iodine content with caution. Hyperthyroidism is not caused by iodine deficiency. When using iodine for treatment, you should follow the doctor's instructions to use the accurate dosage of iodine. Otherwise, excessive intake of iodine in the diet, such as kelp, seaweed, kombu, etc., will affect the doctor's judgment and analysis of the condition and will interfere with clinical treatment.

2. Most patients with hyperthyroidism suffer from the syndrome of Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity, and should avoid the following foods: spicy foods, such as chili peppers, leeks, onions, ginger, raw garlic, etc., as well as foods that are hot in nature and have aphrodisiac and fire-raising effects, such as: cinnamon, ginger, mutton, dog meat, venison, sparrows, shrimps, seahorses, sea cucumbers, etc. Avoid frying, deep-frying, burning or grilling food, so as not to increase heat, raise yang, cause dryness and consume yin. Avoid eating too much greasy and heavy food to prevent dampness, phlegm and heat.

3. Quit smoking and drinking. Tobacco and alcohol are both pungent and hot substances. Over time, they will damage yin, cause dryness, and generate heat. It often makes the condition worse and interferes with treatment.
