How is Shaken Syndrome Diagnosed?

The main symptoms of shaking syndrome are poor mental state and convulsions. In severe cases, the patient may become unconscious and comatose, and may also suffer nerve damage. Therefore, we should provide timely treatment for the onset of shaking syndrome. How should we diagnose whether we have encountered shaking syndrome? We need to understand its symptoms.

1. Symptoms of shaken baby syndrome: poor mental state. Babies with shaken baby syndrome initially show poor mental state, with the main reactions being: drowsiness, loss of appetite or irritability.

2 Symptoms of shaken baby syndrome: After the initial symptoms of convulsions, convulsions will follow. Convulsions may be occasional or localized, but they may also occur frequently. In severe cases, they may even cause coma or death. Sometimes, even if the life is saved, there are serious neurological sequelae.

3 Symptoms of shaken baby syndrome: unconsciousness. The baby's brain tissue is fragile and weak. Severe shaking from external forces may compress the nerves in the brain, causing the baby to become unconscious, and in severe cases even cause death.

4 Symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome: Cerebral hemorrhage Regardless of adults or children, the brain tissue is as fragile as "tofu" and must be avoided from external impact to protect the safety of the brain tissue, especially for babies under 1 year old, who need to pay more attention to the safety of the head. Because at birth, the weight of a baby's brain is nearly half that of an adult's, but its body weight is only about one twentieth of that of an adult, and the baby's neck muscles are relatively weak and insufficient to support the baby's head. In addition, the base and inner surface of the baby's skull are relatively smooth, and the brain tissue is not firmly fixed. It is easy to shake when subjected to strong external force, and the blood vessels connecting the surface of the brain with the veins under the skull will also shake. The shaking brain tissue can easily be "torn" by the sudden change of external force, causing emergencies such as subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage. The vitreous body of the eye can also cause retinal hemorrhage due to severe shaking.

5 What to do if your baby has shaken syndrome

When a baby shows the early symptoms of shaken baby syndrome, such as drowsiness, loss of appetite or irritability, occasionally accompanied by convulsions, parents should take the baby to the hospital for examination and treatment immediately. Because shaken baby syndrome may result in the death of the baby, parents must not take chances and miss the best time for treatment.
