What to do if your child hiccups

What to do if your child hiccups

We all know that children's bodies are in a state of development and their nervous system functions may not be so perfect. Therefore, the child will burp continuously after eating, and expectant mothers must pay attention to these symptoms. Hiccups may be caused by inhaling some air when drinking milk, which causes physical discomfort. At this time, stroking the back can appropriately relieve the symptoms.

For some hiccups that often occur after drinking milk, we must pay attention to the symptoms. At this time, we should consider whether it is because our feeding method may be wrong. If a problem is found, we should correct it immediately to relieve the child's hiccups.

Hiccups are a common symptom in infancy. Constant hiccups are caused by diaphragm spasm and continuous contraction of the diaphragm. The movement of the diaphragm is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. One or two months after a child is born, the autonomic nervous system that regulates the diaphragm is not yet fully developed. When the child is slightly stimulated, such as breathing in cold air or sucking milk too quickly, the diaphragm will suddenly contract, causing rapid inhalation and a "hiccup" sound.

Sometimes a child’s hiccups may last for 5-10 minutes, and they may seem very uncomfortable. However, hiccups themselves do not have any adverse effects on the child’s health, so there is no need to worry.

There is a process of neural development after birth. Generally speaking, after the child is 3 months old, the hiccups will naturally improve after the nerves that regulate the diaphragm develop fully.

So, how do you stop your baby from hiccuping? When your baby hiccups, you can let him suck milk, drink cold water, or use other stimulations, such as moderate light, sound, etc. to relieve the hiccups.

Causes of hiccups

1. It often happens right after drinking milk. It may be caused by the baby crying frequently or eating too quickly during feeding, and swallowing a lot of air.

2. Sometimes hiccups can occur when the stomach is cold or you eat raw or cold food.

3. Other less common causes are related to gastroesophageal reflux disease and diseases such as pneumonia, or to adverse reactions to drugs.

Some pregnant women may feel their baby burping in the second or third month of pregnancy, or see the baby burping in the mother's belly during a prenatal ultrasound examination. However, the most common age for babies to experience frequent hiccups is in the first few months after birth, and it usually improves after one year old.

We have learned about the possible causes of hiccups in children in daily life, and these causes need to be corrected. Although hiccups will not cause any other effects on the body, they may be uncomfortable for children, so we must pay more attention to some of the adverse symptoms of children in daily life and relieve the symptoms in time.
