Reduction techniques for lumbar disc herniation

Although there are many methods for treating lumbar disc herniation in clinical practice, for patients, if the symptoms are particularly obvious, surgical treatment is generally not required. Chinese medicine believes that some massage and reduction methods can help patients with mild lumbar disc herniation relieve their pain. However, some patients have some questions about the reduction technique and don’t know how to do it specifically. This is also a very normal phenomenon. So how to perform the reduction technique for lumbar disc herniation?

one. Side-lying oblique pull method: (most commonly used)

Body position: The affected side is on top, the upper body lies on the side, both lower limbs are straight, the lower body is leaning forward below the hips into a prone position, the abdomen is pressed against the bed, and the doctor stands beside the bed. Patient-oriented.

Technique: The doctor passes his left hand through the patient's armpit, places his forearm on the tendon of the pectoralis major muscle, and places his palm on the back as a fulcrum to stabilize the upper body. (To prevent the patient from shoulder pain, the patient can also hold the doctor's upper arm with both hands). The doctor places his right forearm flat on the patient's buttocks, leans forward, and presses his body weight on it through the upper limbs; with his left hand, he guides the patient's upper body to lean back slightly, and presses the buttocks downward with his right hand, so that the patient's whole body is twisted longitudinally in a "twisted shape". When the maximum limit is reached, the doctor's arms use the leverage effect to exert force in the opposite direction at the same time, and press down with a pause. At this time, the sound of lumbar vertebrae being repositioned can be heard, and the technique is successful.

two. Armpit-holding and waist-turning method

Body position: The patient sits, and the assistant holds the anterior superior iliac spines or the outer roots of the thighs on both sides of the patient to stabilize the pelvis.

Technique: The doctor holds the patient's shoulders through the armpits from behind, and makes the patient lean back. Under stretching and traction, the doctor uses the lumbar spine as the pivot to rotate the patient's upper body toward the affected side. When it reaches the maximum limit, the doctor twists the body with force and a pulling sound can be heard. The doctor then twists the body toward the opposite side using the same method, and the operation is completed.

The above two methods are the more common methods of reducing lumbar disc herniation. Of course, there are many other methods of reducing lumbar disc herniation, which are not introduced one by one in this article. However, if you want to achieve good results when reducing lumbar disc herniation, the cooperation of the patient is very important. During this period, the patient must pay attention to giving the lumbar spine proper rest to ensure the effect.
