What is sensory aphasia?

I don’t know if you have heard of the word aphasia. Aphasia refers to lesions of brain tissue related to language function, such as stroke, brain trauma, brain tumor, brain inflammation, etc., which cause damage to the patient’s ability to understand and express the human communication symbol system. So this time we will learn about the classification of sensory aphasia.

Sensory aphasia

Unable to understand the meaning of words. Characterized by fluent speech but inability to understand what others say. Hearing is normal. The prognosis is poor.

1. Lesion location: posterior superior temporal gyrus (temporal lobe, posterior parietal lobe, lateral occipital lobe)

2. symptom

(1) Wernicke aphasia (primary sensory aphasia): fluent but nonsensical speech and dialogue (gibberish, “language salad”). The spoken and written (grammatical) forms are relatively preserved, but the content and meaning (semantics) are incorrect.

1) Impaired functions: naming, repetition, oral and written comprehension

2) Perfect function: Fluency

3) Paraphasia: A large number of paraphasias and new words mixed together are called gibberish and peculiar language. There are also obvious difficulties in naming and word finding. The language is fluent, but lacks core content and the comments are empty. Such as pronunciation errors (word concept errors, such as confusing "time" with "minute table")

(2) Pure word deafness: Auditory comprehension is impaired, while speech and reading comprehension are relatively preserved. It is more common in cerebrovascular accidents, brain tumors and infections, and the lesions involve unilateral or bilateral temporal lobes.

(3) Dyslexia and agraphia: Reading comprehension and writing are impaired, while oral language is less affected. The prognosis is better.

In fact, aphasia does not include language symptoms caused by impaired consciousness and general intellectual impairment. We should know more about this relatively rare disease. No matter who suffers from this mental illness, we should understand and support them. After all, not being able to speak is painful, and we should understand this pain.
