What does miscarriage mean?

Miscarriage, a disease name in traditional Chinese medicine, refers to a disease in which the fetus, which has already been formed, dies naturally during 12 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. There are broad and narrow meanings. Miscarriage in a broad sense includes threatened abortion (called "fetal leakage" or "fetal movement disorder" in Chinese medicine) which can be preserved to full term after treatment. The miscarriage discussed in this article is in a narrow sense, referring specifically to situations where the fetus is difficult to retain. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is also called half-birth, half-birth, miscarriage, injured pregnancy, premature birth, and damaged pregnancy. It refers to a woman who is pregnant for more than 3 months and whose Chong and Ren meridians are damaged due to weak Qi and blood, kidney deficiency, blood heat and trauma, resulting in Chong and Ren meridians being unstable and unable to absorb blood and nourish the fetus; or the fetus is injured by poisons, resulting in premature birth.

It is equivalent to natural abortion in modern medicine. It means that the fetus has no independent survival ability and is automatically expelled from the mother's body for some reason without the use of artificial methods. It is also called "spontaneous abortion" with an incidence rate of 10% to 15%.

TCM remedies for conditioning the body after miscarriage:

Shengyu Soup

Preparation method: 3 grams of Shengyu Decoction, 4 grams of Jinsuo Gujing Decoction, 1 gram each of Ophiopogon japonicus and donkey-hide gelatin. This is the daily amount.

Effect: replenishes bone marrow, calms the mind and treats postpartum depression.

Motherwort and Eggs

Preparation method: Add 30-60 grams of motherwort and 2 eggs into water and cook together. After the eggs are cooked, peel them and cook for another 5 minutes. Eat the eggs and drink the soup.

Effect: It can treat persistent lochia after artificial abortion and functional uterine bleeding. Motherwort can promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation, promote diuresis and reduce swelling. It can treat various blood stasis diseases in women. It can help the uterus recover and reduce lochia when used after delivery.

Sanjie Dingtong Decoction

Preparation method: 18 grams each of angelica washed with wine, fried hawthorn, 18 grams each of chuanxiong washed with wine, peony bark, black schizonepeta spicate, fried peach kernel, 7 grams each of motherwort, 10 grams of frankincense, and 4 grams of frankincense. Boil them twice in water to obtain the juice and take it warm in the morning and evening.

Effect: Contracts the uterus, nourishes blood and removes blood stasis, promotes the discharge of blood stasis, and relieves pain. Angelica nourishes blood and replenishes deficiency, promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis. Chuanxiong promotes blood circulation and qi, and relieves pain. Paeonia suffruticosa, stir-fried peach kernel, motherwort, and frankincense promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. Black schizonepeta spicate stops bleeding.
