If parents do not pay attention to nutritional balance when feeding their children, the baby is likely to develop symptoms of anemia. Anemia can affect children's growth and development, induce infectious diseases, etc. Therefore, if a child has anemia, parents must help the child replenish blood in time.

1: What to do if your child has anemia

1: As parents, you should always pay attention to your baby's physical condition and do a hemoglobin test on your baby if necessary, because a baby with mild anemia cannot be seen from the outside. If the baby's hemoglobin is too low, it means that he has anemia and he should supplement iron in time and eat foods high in iron. For example: iron-fortified infant formula, iron-containing rice flakes, or iron-containing vitamin drops.

2: While supplementing with foods high in iron, give your baby more fruits rich in vitamin C. This is especially beneficial for improving the absorption rate of iron, which can be increased several times. Kiwi, fresh dates, citrus fruits, etc. are all fruits rich in vitamin C.

3: Foods rich in iron: breast milk, egg yolks, orange juice, vegetable juice, vegetable puree, liver puree, meat puree and iron-fortified foods (such as iron-fortified milk powder, rice flour, flour) and iron-fortified formula milk. Minced meat, fish, tofu, liver, lean meat, soy products, animal blood, millet, sorghum, corn, green leafy vegetables, yellow and red vegetables, black fungus, kelp, and seaweed.

4: Studies have found that the iron in fermented foods is easier to absorb. Therefore, steamed buns, steamed cakes, and bread are more suitable for babies than noodles, pancakes, and rice. When eating leafy vegetables, blanch them in boiling water first to remove most of the oxalic acid, allowing your baby to absorb more iron.

1: When supplementing your baby’s iron, it is not enough to simply look at the iron content in food. If the absorption rate is low, even if the iron content in the food is high, the effect of iron supplementation will not be very good. Iron in food exists in two forms: one is heme iron (also called porphyrin iron) which is easily absorbed; the other is inorganic iron which is poorly absorbed.

2: The iron in the animal liver, blood, livestock and poultry meat, fish and egg yolk mentioned above is heme iron, which is easily absorbed by babies and has a good iron supplement effect. The iron in vegetables and milk is inorganic iron. Although the iron content of vegetables is not low, the baby can absorb relatively little of it, so the iron supplement effect is not very good.

The processes are different, so it is difficult to tell from the outside whether your baby is anemic. It is recommended that mothers choose a regular hospital to have their babies do blood routine and serum ferritin tests to accurately understand whether the baby is anemic or iron deficient.
