Side effects of anesthesia during surgery

Side effects of anesthesia during surgery

Generally, anesthesia will be administered during the operation, which is also a guarantee for the smooth progress of the operation. After the anesthesia, there will be certain side effects, but generally, such side effects can be controlled to the minimum in a regular hospital. The more common side effects of anesthesia are generally nausea and vomiting, temporary inability to urinate, etc. In addition, it may cause some complications, such as muscle soreness, tongue injury, temporary difficulty breathing, etc.

Side effects of anesthesia during surgery

Regardless of the size of the surgery, everyone who has had surgery knows that we have to give anesthesia before the operation. But do you know that anesthetics have side effects and certain risks? Improper use will bring some unnecessary effects. So, what are the side effects of anesthesia?

The mechanism of action of anesthetics is to inhibit the response of the central nervous system. Generally, there are no obvious sequelae, but the dosage must be strictly controlled according to physical signs, otherwise respiratory and cardiac failure may easily occur.

1. Anesthesia that causes coma. The more common temporary side effects of anesthesia are as follows: nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, temporary inability to urinate, sore throat, and headache.

2. Other minor complications of anesthesia include: muscle pain, injury to teeth, dentures, lips, tongue, temporary difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking, and nerve damage.

Does anesthesia have any side effects on the body?

3. Serious complications of anesthesia include heart attack, stroke, severe allergic reaction, brain/lung damage, kidney/liver failure, permanent nerve damage, eye injury, laryngeal damage and pneumonia, but the chances of such complications are very small.

How to use local anesthetics

1. Topical anaesthesia

2. Infiltration anaesthesia

3. Conduction anaesthesia (block anaesthesia)

4. Subarachnoid anaesthesia (spinal anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, subarachnoid anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia)

5. Epidural anaesthesia

Local anesthetic effect

The effect of local anesthetics is related to the diameter of nerve cells or nerve fibers and the anatomical characteristics of nerve tissue. The general rule is that nerve fiber endings, ganglia and synapses in the central nervous system are most sensitive to local anesthetics, and thin nerve fibers are easier to block than thick nerve fibers. It is effective at low concentrations on unmyelinated sympathetic and parasympathetic postganglionic fibers.

High concentrations are required to produce an effect on myelinated sensory and motor nerve fibers. When the mixed nerves are affected, the first thing to disappear is the persistent dull pain (such as tenderness), followed by the transient sharp pain, followed by the disappearance of the sense of cold, warmth, touch, and pressure, and finally motor paralysis. When subarachnoid anesthesia is performed, the autonomic nerves are blocked first, and then the anesthetic effect is produced in the above order. Restoration of nerve impulse conduction occurs in the reverse order.
