Is it a symptom of cerebral palsy if my baby keeps opening his mouth?

Many parents will find that their babies always open their mouths wide. In addition, because cerebral palsy is very common nowadays, many parents mistakenly think that it is cerebral palsy. In fact, when a newborn has cerebral palsy, the first manifestation is visual impairment, intellectual development of the brain is hindered, and there are some abnormalities in hearing. Unlike children of the same age, there will be different changes with age. Occasionally opening the mouth is a physiological characteristic and cannot completely determine whether it is a symptom of cerebral palsy.

First, visual impairment is an early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants: about half of infants with early symptoms of cerebral palsy will have visual impairment, the most common of which are esotropia and refractive errors, such as myopia, amblyopia, etc.; a few have nystagmus, and occasionally they are completely blind.

Second, mental retardation is a typical early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants: about 50% of children have mild to moderate mental retardation, and 25% have severe mental retardation. This is the most common early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants. People with spastic quadriplegia and spastic cerebral palsy often have lower intelligence, but very few children with athetosis have severe intellectual disability. Third, hearing impairment is also an early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants: hearing impairment is an early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants. Some children suffer from hearing loss or even complete deafness. The most common symptom is athetosis caused by hyperbilirubinemia in newborns. Most high-frequency hearing loss requires brainstem auditory evoked potential measurement to be detected.

Fourth, the early symptoms of cerebral palsy in infants also include some other sensory and cognitive abnormalities: children with cerebral palsy often have deficiencies in touch, position sense, solid sense, and two-point discrimination. This is also an early symptom of cerebral palsy in infants. Children often lack correct visual space and three-dimensional perception, and their cognitive function defects are more prominent.
