Abnormal vascular bundles are arranged in multiple circles and intermittently in rings. The vascular bundle is exo-tough, and the xylem vessels are round and polygonal. The thin-walled cells of this product contain a large number of calcium oxalate needle crystal bundles and gelatinized starch granules. (Figure 3) Powder characteristics: pale white. ① There are many calcium oxalate needles, in bundles or scattered, 50-150μm long. ② The vessels are mainly reticulate, with some ladder patterns, and a diameter of 15-130μm; the pores of the reticulate vessels are mostly long and narrow, with lignified walls. ③ There are many starch granules, which are in irregular round blocks. Cloud-shaped, varying in size, with jagged edges.

Pharmacological action: The root contains resin which is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. The flowers emit a strong fragrance at night, which can numb and repel mosquitoes.

The water extract of the same genus plant, Mirabilis jalapa, showed anti-tumor effects in preliminary animal screening tests.
