Dysentery is a common disease among children because their bodies are not fully developed, so their internal organs are fragile and their functions are not as strong as those of adults. If children eat and drink without restraint and overeat, the undigested food will stagnate in the internal organs due to their weak spleen and stomach, and manifest as dysentery. In addition to this reason, if you suddenly catch a cold and the evil qi invades the stomach and intestines, dysentery can also occur. Dysentery is an intestinal infectious disease caused by Shigella dysenteriae. Its main clinical symptoms are abdominal pain, tenesmus, bloody and pus-filled stools, and frequent bowel movements. This disease can occur throughout the year, but is more common in summer and autumn. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this disease is mostly caused by damp heat or epidemic toxins. There are several types: 1. Damp-heat dysentery: symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, tenesmus, dysentery with pus and blood, burning sensation in the anus, short and dark urine, etc. Treatment should focus on clearing away heat and dampness, regulating qi and promoting blood circulation. 2. Toxic dysentery: Symptoms include sudden onset, high fever, thirst, abdominal pain, irritability, tenesmus, purple pus and blood in the stool, and even unconsciousness. The treatment is suitable for clearing away heat, invigorating the orifices, cooling blood and detoxifying. 3. Cold-damp dysentery: Symptoms include abdominal pain, tenesmus, red and white stools, more white and less red, or pure white mucus, poor appetite, abdominal distension, mental fatigue, etc. The treatment should be to warm the middle and dry dampness, promote qi circulation and eliminate stagnation. 4. Intermittent dysentery (chronic dysentery): Symptoms include intermittent dysentery, abdominal pain when going to the toilet, tenesmus, mucus in the stool, mental fatigue, loss of appetite and fear of cold, etc. Treatment should be aimed at warming the middle and strengthening the spleen, clearing away heat and removing dampness. Notes on self-treatment (1) Pay attention to food hygiene, do not drink raw water, do not eat unclean fruits and vegetables, do not eat spoiled food, eat in moderation, and do not drink alcohol to protect the normal function of the spleen and stomach. (2) It is best to keep the knives and cutting boards used for cutting raw and cooked vegetables separate. If conditions do not permit, at least scald it with boiling water before each use. (3) Pay attention to physical exercise and improve physical fitness. (4) Do not seek excessive coolness in summer and autumn. (5) Keep a happy mood and avoid excessive depression, worry, and anger. (6) Develop a good habit of washing hands before meals and after going to the toilet. (7) Patients should be isolated and rest in bed. (8) The diet should mainly consist of semi-liquid foods, and avoid spicy, cold, and greasy foods. |
