Some babies seem to twitch and shake their heads while breastfeeding. Such occasional situations are mostly normal. What symptoms will the child have if he is deficient in calcium?

Most children do not have any obvious symptoms of calcium deficiency. A few children will experience non-specific symptoms such as growing pains, joint pain, palpitations, insomnia, etc. Severe calcium deficiency will cause clinical manifestations such as rickets.

In the neonatal period, temporary parathyroid insufficiency and calcium deficiency may lead to hypocalcemia, resulting in increased neuromuscular excitability, hand and foot cramps, laryngeal spasms, and even convulsions.

Long-term insufficient calcium intake and vitamin D deficiency are the main causes of calcium deficiency. Infants under 2 years old grow very fast and require relatively more calcium, making them a high-risk group for calcium deficiency. Therefore, it is now advocated that infants should be supplemented with an additional 1/3 of the recommended amount of calcium from two weeks after birth, and this should be continued until at least 2 years old, otherwise the child will easily suffer from calcium deficiency again.

Get more sun

Ultraviolet rays can promote the synthesis of VD (vitamin D) in the body and facilitate the absorption of calcium. But now the weather is hot, and ultraviolet rays can damage children's skin, so babies under 6 months old should avoid direct sunlight.

Blanch vegetables first

Vegetables with high oxalic acid content should be blanched first to destroy the oxalic acid, because oxalic acid will affect the absorption of calcium, and then cooked. Such as cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, amaranth, water spinach, mustard greens, snow vegetable, and bamboo shoots.

Vitamin D supplementation

Vitamin D can maintain calcium metabolic balance and bone formation, and is beneficial to calcium absorption. Daily supplementation of 0.01 mg of vitamin D can ensure the intake of vitamin D and effectively prevent vitamin D deficiency and rickets in children.
