Cyperus rotundus

Cyperus rotundus is another name for Cyperus rotundus, a green plant of the Cyperaceae family with long creeping rhizomes and oval tubers. The leaves are numerous, shorter than the stalks, and flat; the sheaths are dark brown and often broken into fibers. The long-branched cymes are simple or recurrent, with long, linear anthers, dark red, long styles, and obovate, trillium-shaped, nutlets. Fruiting period is May-November.

The creeping rhizome is long and has oval tubers. The culm is slightly thin, 15-95 cm high, sharply trillium-shaped, smooth, and tuberous at the tip. There are many leaves, shorter than the culm, 2-5mm wide, and flat; the sheath is dark brown and often broken into fibers. The calyx is 2-3(-5) in number, often extending from the capitula, or sometimes shorter than the capitula; the long-branched cymes are simple or recurrent, with (2-)3-10 radiates; the radiates are up to 12 cm long; the spikelet outline is gyroidal, slightly loose, with 3-10 spikelets; the spikelets are obliquely ramified, linear, 1-3 cm long, about 1.5 mm wide, with 8-28 calyxes; the spikelet axis has a broader, milky white transparent wing; the scales are slightly densely shingled, membranous, ovate or oblong-ovate, about 3 mm long, acute or obtuse at the apex, without mucro, green in the middle, dark purple or brownish red on both sides, with 5-7 veins; the pistils are 3, the anthers are long, linear, dark red, the connective protruding from the anther tip; the style is long, the columns are 3, slender, extending beyond the scales. The nutlets are oblong-obovate, trillium-shaped, 1/3-2/5 the length of fish scales, with fine points. The fruit season is from May to November.
