Does drinking liquor lower blood pressure?

Does drinking liquor lower blood pressure?

Drinking too much alcohol will cause alcohol poisoning, which can make people dizzy and cause hallucinations, so many people will not drive after drinking. The main substance contained in alcohol is ethanol, so long-term drinking, if only in small amounts, will cause a slight increase in blood pressure. Drinking a lot of alcohol can significantly increase the body's blood pressure. Some people say that drinking white wine can lower blood pressure. Is it true?

Scientific research has shown that alcohol can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure. For healthy people with normal blood pressure, drinking too much alcohol at one time, that is, drinking more than 1000 ml of beer or more than 150 ml of liquor, will cause a one-time increase in blood pressure.

Of course, for normal people, this increase in blood pressure is temporary and will soon return to normal on its own. However, if this level of alcohol intake is maintained for a long time, over time it may lead to the inability to lower blood pressure and eventually lead to hypertension.

This is why it is not recommended for patients with hypertension to drink alcohol. Alcohol not only increases blood pressure, but may also cause calcium and cholesterol to deposit on blood vessel walls and accelerate arteriosclerosis. For people whose blood pressure is already high, drinking large amounts of alcohol will often cause a spike in blood pressure and even induce a series of complications.

So does it mean that patients with high blood pressure cannot drink any alcohol at all? In fact, it is not so absolute. Zeng Jing, attending physician of the Nutrition Department of the Guangdong Corps Hospital of the Armed Police Force, said in a previous interview that because red wine contains phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and purpurins, it can dilate microvessels and protect the cardiovascular system to a certain extent. Therefore, if the hypertension is not too serious, you can still drink some red wine, but the amount should be controlled within 100 ml.

If a patient with hypertension wants to drink white wine instead of red wine, he or she should think twice before doing so, because white wine often has a higher alcohol content. Drinking it will cause the body's systolic and diastolic blood pressure to increase, and it is easy to drink too much. Therefore, it is best for patients with hypertension not to drink alcohol.
