[Plant morphology] Annual twining herb. The stem is left-handed, more than 2 meters long, much branched, and covered with short hairs. Leaves are alternate; with long petioles; leaf blades are cordate-ovate, 3-6 cm long, often 3-lobed to the middle, halberd-shaped, acute at the apex, cordate at the base, and covered with recumbent hairs on both sides. It blooms in summer, with 1 to 3 flowers in the axillary, extremely short pedicels, and the peduncle is generally shorter than the petiole; the calyx is deeply lobed into 5 parts, the lobes are linear-lanceolate, with long pointed tips, and long hairs at the base, spreading outward; the corolla is funnel-shaped, shaped like a trumpet, blue, purple or white, with 5 shallow lobes at the edge, opening in the morning and gradually withering in the middle of the day; there are 5 stamens of unequal length, with hairs at the base of the filaments, and the ovary has 3 chambers, each with 2 ovules. The capsule is spherical, with an outer or recurved persistent calyx at the base. The seeds are three-sided and ovate; the seeds with light color are yellowish brown and are called "white ugly" in medicine, while the seeds with dark color are mostly black brown and are called "black ugly" in medicine. Flowering and fruiting period is summer and autumn.

[Distribution] Grown in shrub forests on hillsides or next to houses; mostly cultivated. It is produced all over the country.

[Harvesting and processing] Harvest the plants in late autumn when the fruits are ripe and the shells have not cracked, dry them in the sun, remove the seeds, and remove impurities.

[Properties of the medicinal material] Orange segment shape. 4~8 mm long and 3~5 mm wide. The surface is gray-black or light yellow-white. There is a shallow longitudinal groove on the back, and a dot-shaped hilum at the lower end of the ventral ridge, which is slightly concave. It is hard in texture, and the cross section shows light yellow or yellow-green wrinkled and folded cotyledons, which are slightly oily. Odorless, spicy, bitter, and numbing.

[Effects and functions] It can relieve constipation, eliminate phlegm and fluid, kill parasites and attack accumulation. It is a laxative drug, which is classified under the category of purgative drugs.

[Clinical application] The dosage is 3 to 6 grams, decocted in water. It is used to treat edema, constipation, accumulation of phlegm and fluid, gas reversal, asthma and cough, abdominal pain caused by worms, ascariasis, and red worm disease. Pregnant women are prohibited from using it. It should not be used with croton or croton cream.

[Main ingredients] Contains morning glory resin glycoside (also known as morning glory seed glycoside), which is the active ingredient of morning glory seed for laxative effect. Among them, the structural formulas of petuniasic acid C and petuniasic acid D have been proven to have laxative, diuretic, smooth muscle stimulating and anthelmintic effects.
