Winter itching

Winter itching

In winter, the whole body will feel itchy, which confuses many friends. Friends who experience itching all over their body in winter may have problems with dry skin or rash. It is recommended that such friends go to a regular dermatology hospital for examination in time, and then receive treatment after finding out the cause.

In fact, there are many reasons that can cause skin itching. Itchy skin in summer may be caused by mosquitoes, but itchy skin in winter is different. It could be just a minor problem like dryness or a rash, but it could also be a sign of a more serious illness.

Why does my skin sometimes itch so much in winter?

The most common causes of skin itching are:

Dryness: When it comes to dry skin, the first thing that comes to your mind may be rough dead skin, but in fact, you don’t have to wait until dead skin appears. You will feel itchy as long as your skin feels slightly dry.

Allergic dermatitis: 90% of patients with allergic dermatitis will experience recurring itching symptoms. People with atopic dermatitis may experience itching all over their body, including: feet, ankles, knees, elbows, hands, wrists, chest, neck, face, and even eyelids. But the good news is that as patients age, the symptoms of atopic dermatitis will gradually improve.

Irritant contact dermatitis: When the skin comes into contact with certain chemicals, it may cause an allergic reaction and cause itching. Allergy symptoms may develop quickly, but may also require continued exposure for a period of time to develop. For example, nickel metal, rubber (such as in lotion), hair dye, neomycin, and fragrances and preservatives in skin care products may cause irritation and lead to contact dermatitis.

Fungal infection: Fungi can cause a variety of skin infections, which can also cause itching. Severe cases may also lead to redness, peeling, tinea pedis, tinea cruris, psoriasis and other symptoms.

How can I stop the itching?

Sometimes, people with itching can find the cause by analyzing their lifestyle, but in urgent cases, they need to see a doctor for blood tests to confirm the diagnosis.

However, protecting your skin is your top priority. You can also do the following:

Avoid contact with strong detergents and hot water;

Apply moisturizer while your skin is damp, such as after a bath or shower;

Dress light, loose and comfortable;

Keep indoor ventilation

Drug treatment: Many dermatitis occur because the skin's immune response is too strong. At this time, you can use topical corticosteroids or immunomodulators under the guidance of a doctor to "relax" the skin and relieve symptoms. Alternatively, you can take an oral antihistamine.

Of course, some patients with allergic dermatitis may also have other allergic symptoms, such as asthma, hay fever, etc. When treating skin itching, such patients should also consider other diseases.
