The elongated stems become shrunken or nearly creeping. The plant height is 10-40 cm, and the leaves are fleshy and pinnate. The taproot is well developed. Stems 1-3, clumped, weak. The leaves have long petioles; the leaf blade is triangular-ovate in outline, pinnately divided twice, with 5 lobes in one time, short-petioled, and 3 lobes in the second time, rhombic or ovate, 2-5cm long, 1-3cm wide, pointed at the apex, and coarsely serrated on the margin. The raceme is terminal or opposite to the leaves and is fleshy. The stem is single or clustered, and the stem and leaves are densely covered with white hairs. The basal petiole is long, the leaves are doubly pinnate, and the leaflets are divided into 3 to 5 pieces. The raceme is terminal, with long stalks, golden yellow flowers, nearly cylindrical, and petals slightly 2-lobed at the tip. Capsule linear, hairy. It blooms from June to July and bears fruit from July to September. 7-14cm long; bracts elliptic to lanceolate; pedicels equal in length to or slightly shorter than bracts; corolla slightly curved downward; stigma 2-lobed. The surface is light yellow to brownish yellow, with longitudinal cracks or grooves, the cork is well developed and easy to peel off; the texture is loose, the cross section is irregular, like rotten wood, the boundary between the bark and the wood is not obvious, the complete one has two pinnate divisions, each with 5 lobes, odd numbers in pairs, and the last lobe is rhombus or ovate. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste. It likes cool climatic conditions, the growth temperature is 0-30℃, the optimum temperature is 10.20℃, the growth stops above 30℃, and when it is above 33℃, the stems and leaves are extremely fragile and tender, and are easily damaged by heavy rain.
