These are the causes of facial edema. Let us understand these reasons in detail. (I) Periodontal abscess This condition is often caused by not paying attention to oral hygiene and is mostly caused by anaerobic bacteria. It can cause facial edema, increased temperature, erythema and purulent secretions around the affected teeth. (ii) Peritonsillar abscess This complication of tonsillitis may produce nonpitting facial edema. Other serious symptoms and signs include severe sore throat, swelling in the neck, excessive salivation, cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, chills, and malaise. (III) Allergic reaction Facial edema can be characterized by local allergic and anaphylactic reactions. Local reactions may produce facial edema, erythema, and urticaria. In life-threatening allergic reactions, angioedema facialis may produce urticaria and flushing. Airway edema may cause hoarseness, wheezing, and bronchospasm with shortness of breath and dyspnea. Symptoms of shock such as low blood pressure and cold, clammy skin may also occur. (IV) Cavernous sinus thrombosis Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare but serious condition that may present with nonpitting edema that rapidly spreads to the bilateral forehead, base of nose, and eyelids; it may also present with fever, chills, headache, nausea, lethargy, eye pain, and proptosis. (V) Meibomian cyst Chalazion presents as localized swelling and tenderness over the affected eyelid, accompanied by small red nodules on the conjunctival surface. (VI) Conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition that causes eyelid swelling, excessive tearing, and itching and burning of the eyes. Visual inspection may reveal purulent discharge, eyelid crusting, and conjunctival hyperemia. Corneal involvement manifests as photophobia and pain. 7. Fungal corneal ulcer This disease can cause conjunctival congestion, intense pain, photophobia and severe visual impairment, accompanied by red and swollen eyelids. A large amount of purulent secretions cause the eyelids to stick together and form crusts. It is characterized by dense, gray-white, slow-growing annular ulcers surrounding a central ulcer. (8) Lacrimal gland inflammation Dacryoadenitis is characterized by severe periocular swelling. It may also cause conjunctival injection, purulent discharge, and pain around the temple. (IX) Dacryocystitis Dacryocystitis can cause severe eyelid swelling and persistent tearing. Patients with acute onset may also have pain and tenderness around their lacrimal sacs, accompanied by purulent secretions. (10) Dermatomyositis This rare disease is characterized by progressive periorbital edema and a phototropic rash. An itchy, light-colored rash may appear on the bridge of the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Localized or diffuse erythema, eye pain, and fever may also occur.
