Nux vomica poisoning

Nux vomica poisoning

Speaking of strychnine, many friends may not know what it is. However, I believe that friends who know something about Chinese medicine should know that it is a kind of Chinese medicine. Although strychnine can be used to treat diseases, if the amount taken is not controlled, it can easily lead to strychnine poisoning. The more you take, the more obvious the symptoms of strychnine poisoning will be.

In today's clinical practice, strychnine is mainly used to treat some joint bone diseases and spinal diseases. With the increasing number of patients with such diseases, the application of strychnine is becoming more and more widespread. In order to ensure your safety when using it, I hope you can understand some knowledge about strychnine poisoning.

After poisoning, it mainly acts on the nervous system. Strychnine can prevent the destruction of acetylcholine by cholesterase, and its excitatory effect may be due to the large amount of acetylcholine preserved in tissues. A toxic dose of strychnine can cause excessive inhibition of the cerebral cortex, resulting in a significant hyperreflexia of the spinal cord and special tonic spasms, often leading to suffocation and death due to tonic contraction of the respiratory muscles.

Clinical manifestations of strychnine poisoning

Dizziness, lightheadedness, chest tightness, nausea, vomiting, itching, pain, burning, abdominal pain, irritability, slow heartbeat, increased blood pressure, increased breathing, cramps in the chewing muscles and neck muscles, difficulty swallowing, rapid breathing, pupil constriction, whole body tightening, then the extensor and flexor muscles contract extremely at the same time, followed by the typical symptoms of strychnine, from clonus to rigidity with opisthotonos, convulsion symptoms can last from more than 10 minutes to several hours, and can last from a few seconds to several minutes, any stimulation can cause convulsions to occur again, and the muscles relax after the convulsions. In severe poisoning, the medulla oblongata is paralyzed, the myocardium and respiratory muscles are inhibited, and death may occur due to respiratory paralysis, suffocation, heart failure, or ventricular fibrillation. It can be divided into mild, moderate and severe poisoning.

After understanding some symptoms of strychnine poisoning, if it is a severe poisoning, the poisoned person will die on the spot. This shows the great medicinal effect of strychnine. In order to avoid strychnine poisoning, if you need to take strychnine, it is recommended that you pay attention to appropriate control of the amount when taking it for the first time, preferably a little less than the applicable amount.
