Where should intravenous anesthesia be given?

Anesthesia is a necessary preoperative step for surgery in order to relieve the pain caused by the operation and make the patient more comfortable. However, anesthesia is not such a simple matter. It requires doctors to have superb skills. The anesthesia area generally needs to be injected through the vein in order to achieve a better anesthesia effect. Let’s take a look at where intravenous anesthesia is injected? Let’s take a look at the explanation below.

Intravenous anesthesia is to open the intravenous channel first, usually on the hand, and then inject anesthetic into the human body through the vein. Intravenous anesthesia is often used in combination to give full play to the characteristics of each drug in order to achieve stable anesthesia, mild physiological disturbance, few side effects, and rapid awakening. Therefore, it is also called intravenous combined anesthesia. This method can be used for short surgeries without endotracheal intubation, induction of general anesthesia, endotracheal tube placement and maintenance of general anesthesia. Pediatric medication is calculated based on weight. Intravenous anesthesia is a method in which drugs are injected intravenously and act on the central nervous system through the blood circulation to produce general anesthesia.

Intravenous anesthesia usually involves injecting a certain dose of intravenous anesthetic into a vein in the arm or dorsum of the foot, allowing the patient to quickly enter a relatively deep state of anesthesia from a conscious state so that surgery can be performed. The conventional site for intravenous anesthesia is to choose the intravenous access in the arm or upper limb. Only when the intravenous access in the upper arm cannot be established, the intravenous access in the dorsum of the foot will be selected. When the arm and dorsalis pedis veins cannot be punctured successfully, and the patient has heavy bleeding, shock, or very poor peripheral vascular capacity, central vein puncture is the only option.

In clinical practice, intravenous anesthesia is the process of injecting intravenous anesthetics into the veins through an intravenous infusion device, which acts on the brain through the blood circulation. Intravenous anesthesia may cause respiratory depression, drastic fluctuations in blood pressure, and even serious arrhythmias, but the chances of these situations occurring are small. The advantages of intravenous anesthesia are mainly a faster onset of action and faster awakening, but attention should be paid to its inhibitory effect on respiration to prevent life-threatening consequences from respiratory depression.
