What are the effects and functions of white mustard?

White mustard has a relatively high antibacterial effect. For example, it can be used to treat and fight against Xanthophyton fungus or skin fungi. It can also treat neuralgia, rheumatism, pleurisy, or sprains.

1. Antifungal effect : White mustard water extract (1:3) has different degrees of inhibitory effect on skin fungi such as Trichophyton violaceum and Trichophyton schrenckii in test tubes.

2. Stimulating effect Sinapis glycoside itself has no irritating effect. When it comes into contact with water, it will generate volatile oil (mustard oil) through the action of mustard enzyme. Mustard volatile oil has a pungent and spicy taste and stimulating effect. When applied to the skin, it can cause a warming sensation and redness, and may even cause blisters or pustules. Usually, the fatty oil is removed from mustard powder and made into mustard plaster for use as an anti-irritant (when irritating drugs are used locally on the skin, their effects are not limited to the application site, but involve other parts, and when a therapeutic effect is produced, it is called an anti-irritant effect) to treat neuralgia, rheumatism, pleurisy and sprains. Moisten it with warm water before use to enhance the effect of mustard enzyme (boiling water inhibits the effect of mustard enzyme). The application time should not exceed 15 to 30 minutes. Those with sensitive skin can only apply it for 5 to 10 minutes. Mustard powder, as a flavoring agent, increases saliva secretion and amylase activity, and reduces heart volume and heart rate. Small amounts can stimulate the gastric mucosa to increase the secretion of gastric and pancreatic juice, and sometimes relieve stubborn hiccups. Taking a large amount orally can quickly induce vomiting and can be used to treat narcotic drug poisoning.

3. Other effects: Sinapis albicans hydrolyzate stimulates the gastric mucosa, reflexively causing increased bronchial secretion, thinning the sputum and acting as an expectorant.
