Which upper limb has higher blood pressure?

Which upper limb has higher blood pressure?

When measuring human blood pressure, it is usually done by using a blood pressure instrument to measure the blood pressure of the upper limbs, but the blood pressure condition will show different results depending on a person's physical condition and mood on that day. I believe everyone is afraid of suffering from high blood pressure because high blood pressure can cause many complications. Therefore, the blood pressure value should be determined according to the patient's physical condition. Which area of the left or right upper limb has higher blood pressure?

1. Which arm has higher blood pressure?

Objective To observe the difference in blood pressure between left and right upper limbs of hypertensive patients by measuring blood pressure of both upper limbs at the same time. Methods 100 hypertensive patients were randomly selected, and the blood pressure of the left and right upper limbs of the same individual was measured simultaneously by connecting two desktop mercury sphygmomanometers in series.

Results When any airbag was inflated or deflated, the two mercury columns rose and fell synchronously, and there was no visible difference in their speed. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the right upper limb in the male group, female group and the overall group were slightly higher than those in the left upper limb, but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion The method of measuring blood pressure of left and right upper limbs of patients with hypertension simultaneously is scientific, simple and practical, and easy for patients to accept. The method of simultaneously measuring the blood pressure of the left and right upper limbs provides a reliable basis for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with hypertension.

2. What is the role of blood pressure testing?

Identify the disease. If a patient faints after an injection of medicine, measure his blood pressure. If it is normal, it means he is suffering from needle phobia. If it is low or cannot be measured, it means he is in anaphylactic shock.

Diagnose illness. Patients with hypertension and hypotension can be diagnosed by measuring blood pressure.

Provide guidance on medication. If a patient with hypertension experiences dizziness, by measuring blood pressure, if the blood pressure is low, then the patient can no longer use blood pressure-lowering drugs, while if the patient has high blood pressure, then the dizziness needs to be treated with antihypertensive drugs.

By measuring blood pressure, you can clearly know your blood pressure condition, which plays an important guiding role in your daily life, diet, medication, health care, etc.

If it is hypotension, the arterial blood pressure is lower than the normal value for a long time but there are no obvious symptoms. Such people may occasionally feel dizzy and other discomforts. If it is hypertension, if the resting arterial blood pressure exceeds the normal range of variation for a long time, especially if the diastolic pressure exceeds 90 mmHg for a long time, it can be considered as hypertension, which belongs to the pathological category.

3. What is the normal range of blood pressure?

Diagnostic criteria for hypertension: If blood pressure is measured using the correct method, three times on different days (generally once every 2 weeks), systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg), hypertension can be diagnosed. For example: if your blood pressure measurements three times are around 145/80, then you can be diagnosed with hypertension; if you say that my systolic pressure is not high, the systolic pressure is probably around 135, but the diastolic pressure is always around 95, then you should also be diagnosed with hypertension.

Simply put, if your blood pressure is measured multiple times on different days, whether only the high pressure exceeds 140, only the low pressure exceeds 90, or both exceed the normal indicators, then all three situations can be diagnosed as hypertension; if the blood pressure you measure is between 120-139/80-89 mmHg, it is high-normal blood pressure, that is, it is between the normal blood pressure and the hypertension diagnostic criteria. In this case, you need to measure regularly to monitor blood pressure changes for early prevention and early treatment.

The correct way to check blood pressure

When measuring blood pressure for the first time, the blood pressure of both arms should be measured. When measuring blood pressure in the future, the arm with the higher reading the first time should be used for measurement. About 20% of patients will have different blood pressure values in both arms. However, if the measurement is repeated three times and the difference in systolic blood pressure between the two arms is more than 20 mmHg or the difference in diastolic blood pressure is more than 10 mmHg for three consecutive times, you can consult a doctor for further evaluation.

Place your elbow lightly on the table, raise your forearm and adjust it so that the cuff and heart are at the same level. You can support your forearm with your hand. Because hand muscle contraction may cause diastolic blood pressure to increase by up to 10%, and the position of the compression cuff above the heart level may cause the measured blood pressure to be lower than the actual level by up to 10 mmHg.

Because blood pressure changes throughout the day, you should take it at the same time every day.
