What to do if your throat hurts while giving a lecture

Causes of sore throat

The throat is not only the necessary path for normal breathing, but also an important voice box. Therefore, everyone should pay attention to protecting their voice, especially teachers, actors, and broadcasters. First of all, we should pay attention to persist in outdoor activities to enhance the body's defense against disease and avoid the occurrence of pharyngitis and laryngitis. The second is to develop good throat hygiene habits. Rinse your throat with clean water before and after meals, drink more tea and keep your throat clean. If your throat becomes uncomfortable, itchy, dry or burning, hot fumigation can be used. The method is to breathe into a steaming teacup or teapot with your mouth, and the discomfort will soon disappear. You can also pour about 30 ml of compound benzoin tincture into a large pot with about 500 ml of boiling water, and breathe into the hot steam. It is possible to also use chrysanthemum, honeysuckle or puffed sea to make tea.

Regardless of the cause of hoarseness, its common characteristics are accompanied by congestion, swelling and pain in the vocal cords and surrounding tissues. The following methods are more effective.

1. Mix and eat with Tremella. Wash and soak the white fungus, tear it into strips and pieces, blanch it with boiling water, rinse it with cold water, then add vinegar and eat it twice a day, with no limit on the amount. You will see improvement after 2 days.

2. Mix and eat with celery. Wash and cut the celery, blanch it, add vinegar and eat it, a small plate at a time, twice a day.

3. Drink strong herbal tea. Use boiling water to make a large cup of strong tea with 25 grams of tea leaves, and drink it regularly after it cools down.

4. Fengyoujing is attractive. Pour a few drops of medicated oil on a clean handkerchief, place it on the nostrils and inhale, 4 to 6 times a day.

5. Apply cold compress to your neck. Soak a towel with cold or ice water and apply it to the front neck and throat for about 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day.

6. Take 6 grams each of mint and chrysanthemum, brew with boiling water and drink as tea, one dose per day.

Here are some tips for protecting your voice in daily life:

1. Limit talking time outside of work and reduce unnecessary long chats or phone calls.

2. Speak at an appropriate volume and make good use of the microphone to make up for insufficient volume.

3. Speak slowly, pause frequently to breathe, and don't make a sentence too long.

4. The speaking tone should not be too low or too high, and the emphasis should not be placed on the prefix of each sentence.

5. Whispering is not the right way to speak.

6. When speaking for a long time, you should drink more warm water to keep your throat moist.

7. Try to speak easily using your abdomen (i.e. Dantian), and don't speak with your chest or by tensing your neck muscles.

8. Do not smoke, drink, or eat spicy or fried foods, such as strong tea, coffee, chili, chocolate, cold drinks, etc.

9. Avoid clearing your throat, coughing, etc.

10. Get enough sleep.
