Urticaria occurs when it is cold

People with weak skin barriers or who are prone to allergies must be careful to prevent the occurrence of urticaria. Because urticaria is also related to the external environment, if it is in an environment with a large number of bacteria, it is easy to induce urticaria. Some urticaria patients develop large patches of red rashes on their skin when the weather turns cold. This condition is related to the temperature changes in the weather. So why does cold weather trigger hives?

After winter comes, some people will develop large bumps on their bodies when they come into contact with cold wind and cold water. They become swollen and itchy, but the bumps disappear without a trace in just a few hours, only to reappear when the weather gets cold. A dermatologist at Ji'an Second Hospital reminded that this might be urticaria, and patients must find allergens in time and receive symptomatic treatment to prevent it from becoming a chronic condition.

Two types of urticaria are most likely to cause trouble in winter

Urticaria is more common in spring, but this does not mean that other seasons are "safe". Cold urticaria and contact urticaria often occur in winter. The climate is dry in winter and the skin's immunity is relatively reduced. Coupled with the influence of external factors such as cold wind and allergens, urticaria may take advantage of the situation to invade.

Among them, two types of urticaria are most likely to occur in winter.

Cold urticaria

Cold urticaria refers to the rash that occurs when a person comes into contact with cold water or is exposed to a cool breeze outside in cold weather. Some people may also become itchy all over as soon as they walk into a warm room from the cold outdoors, especially after taking a hot shower. Red spots may appear on the chest and arms, which are extremely itchy. Cold weather is the main trigger for this type of hives.

Contact urticaria

Unlike cold urticaria, contact urticaria is associated with an allergen. As the temperature drops in winter, many people add more clothes and quilts to keep warm, but they don’t know that the materials of clothes and quilts may also be allergens. In the outpatient clinic, we found cases where patients developed urticaria after changing to duck down quilts. He pointed out that due to personal physical reasons, many people will experience systemic allergies, erythema and urticaria clusters when covering themselves with duck down quilts. Some people may even suffer from asthma and laryngeal edema, which is medically known as down allergy. Therefore, people who have special allergic reactions to fur, or who suffer from allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthmatic tracheitis, bronchitis asthma, etc., should be extra cautious in choosing quilts.

How to avoid urticaria

Urticaria is a relatively common allergic skin disease. Once an allergic skin reaction occurs, it should be treated promptly to identify the allergen to avoid worsening of the condition. In daily life, temperature differences, exposure to cold air and cold water, eating shrimp and crabs, and even metal braces used for dental fillings can all cause urticaria. Therefore, to prevent and treat urticaria, it is necessary to identify the allergens as much as possible. In addition, people with allergies should pay special attention to their daily lives, try to choose foods without food additives and preservatives, try to avoid eating seafood, and try to choose high-quality oils, salt and other seasonings when cooking. Only by doing a comprehensive range of preventive health care in life and paying attention to various details can you stay away from urticaria.
