What causes lip inflammation and what are its types?

In winter, many people's lips are prone to dryness and inflammation, and the condition never heals over and over again. So what are the causes of lip inflammation? Why do lips become inflamed?

1. Causes of acute cheilitis

Acute cheilitis is often related to acute inflammation, mostly caused by acute coccal infection. Acute coccal stomatitis, also known as "acute membranous stomatitis", is an oral inflammation caused by cocci. It can be seen in children of any age, but is more common in infants and young children. Modern medicine believes that there are many pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria in the human oral cavity.

2. Causes of chronic cheilitis

The cause of chronic cheilitis is relatively complex and is mostly related to various chronic, long-term stimulations, such as contact with allergens (toothpaste, lipstick), tobacco, alcohol, or eating spicy and irritating foods, infection, sunlight, mechanical stimulation (biting lips, licking lips, drooling in children, sucking fingers) and physical factors, etc., which may induce this disease and form chronic damage such as dryness, cracking, exudation, and scabs on the lips.

3. Causes of contact cheilitis

The inflammation caused by contact of the lips or the skin around them with certain irritants has the same cause and pathogenesis as contact dermatitis and is an allergic disease. Actinic cheilitis is common in farmers, fishermen and outdoor workers, and is related to long-term exposure to sunlight. Symptoms are more obvious in summer. Long exposure to sunlight will aggravate the condition, while reduced exposure to sunlight will alleviate the symptoms. The course of this disease is similar to that of polymorphic light eruption.
