Annual or biennial herb, 60 to 100 cm high. The stem is erect, simple or branched, quadrangular, and slightly hairy. Leaves are opposite; leaf shapes vary; petiole length is 0.5 to 8 cm. The annual plant has basal leaves with long petioles, slightly rounded leaves, 4-8 cm in diameter, 5-9 shallow lobes, lobes with 2-3 obtuse teeth, and cordate base; the leaves in the middle of the stem have short petioles, 3-divided, lobes nearly lanceolate, the central lobe often 3-lobed again, and the lobes on both sides 1-2-lobed again, the final lobe width is usually more than 3 mm, the apex is gradually pointed, the margin is sparsely serrated or nearly entire; the uppermost leaves are undivided, linear, nearly sessile, green above, covered with strigose hairs, light green below, covered with sparse soft hairs and glandular dots.

Cymes are axillary, with 8-15 flowers; bracts are needle-shaped, without pedicels; calyx is bell-shaped, with fine pubescence on the outside, 5-cleft at the apex, with thorny tips, the lower 2 teeth are longer than the upper 2 teeth, and are persistent; corolla is lip-shaped, light red or purple-red, 9-12mm long, with soft pubescence on the outside, the upper lip is almost the same length as the lower lip, the upper lip is oblong, entire, with ciliated edges, the lower lip is 3-cleft, the central lobe is larger, inverted heart-shaped

There are 4 stamens, didynamous, inserted near the middle of the inner surface of the corolla, with filaments sparsely covered with scaly hairs, and the flower has 2 chambers; there is 1 pistil, the ovary is 4-lobed, the style is filiform, slightly longer than the stamens, and the stigma is 2-lobed. The nutlets are brown, triangular, wider and flatter at the top, cuneate at the base, and about 2.5 mm long. The flowering period is from June to September, and the fruiting period is from July to October.
