What should I do if I can’t urinate after holding my urine for a long time?

1. If you cannot urinate after holding your urine for a long time, if this happens frequently, you should be alert to whether it is cystitis.

1. Clinical manifestations of acute cystitis

The disease often starts suddenly, with burning pain in the urethra during urination, frequent urination, often accompanied by urgency, which can be similar to urinary incontinence in severe cases. The frequency and urgency of urination are often particularly obvious, reaching 5 to 6 times per hour or more, with a small amount of urine each time, even only a few drops. There may be lower abdominal pain at the end of urination. The urine is turbid and sometimes hematuria is present, often evident in the terminal stage.

There is mild tenderness over the suprapubic bladder area. Some patients may experience mild low back pain. When the inflammatory lesions are limited to the bladder mucosa, there is often no fever or leukocytosis in the blood, the systemic symptoms are mild, and some patients feel fatigued. Acute cystitis that occurs in women after their wedding is called honeymoon cystitis. The course of acute cystitis is relatively short. If treated promptly, the symptoms will disappear in about 1 week.

2. Chronic cystitis

Symptoms of frequent urination, urgency, and pain during urination are long-term and recurrent, but not as severe as in the acute phase. There are small or moderate amounts of pus cells and red blood cells in the urine. If cystitis is treated promptly, the symptoms will disappear quickly. At this time, patients should not take it lightly, but should persist in treatment and stop only after the doctor confirms through examination that the cystitis has been cured. Do not let cystitis become chronic.

2. Disease Prevention

1. Drink plenty of water, preferably two liters a day.

2. Urinate in time and don’t hold your urine.

3. Pay attention to personal hygiene and change and wash underwear frequently. After urinating, women should wipe from front to back with clean toilet paper.

4. Both men and women should thoroughly clean the local area before and after sexual intercourse, and empty the bladder immediately before and after sexual intercourse.
